Pig Out: Warsow Hits v1.0

I’ve visited Warsow a number of times during RPS’ years of activity, and so it’s pleasing to see it arrive at version 1.0. There are no doubt youthful readers among the RPS hordes who were not, er, in their prime for the bouncy, bunny-hoppy, ultra-faced paced era of the multiplayer FPS, and for whom such things seem like an anachronism. But it was only a decade-and-a-bit ago, and it remains and thrilling and compelling form of the FPS. It’s been recalibrated to near-abstract extremes by Warsow, and if you are not familiar with such things you owe it to yourself to take a look. You will be hammered by the denizens of its servers, of course, but perhaps you will break through into the joy that sits on the other side of the difficulty precipice.

Pig Out On Warsow v0.6

You might recall that I had a riot with Warsow last year, and I do intend to make it an RPS Game Club game in the new year, assuming I can sort us out a private server. Well, version 0.6 of the Quake-like fast-paced FPS is out now, with new game modes, new power ups, and a bunch of performance and engine updates. It’s free, too. Worth grabbing, if you’re in the mood for something fast. The community is small and pretty hardcore, but it’s an excellent piece of work, and you will have some great games if you persist.

Hop, Skip, And Frag: Warsow

On the recommendation of RPS reader MD I’ve spent the morning playing Warsow. And it’s a minor deathmatch riot. The game is a Quake-like FPS deathmatch game, but with amplified movement abilities: the bunny-hop is there, but also weapon-kinetics jumping, wall-jumping, dashing, and even ramp-sliding. All of which makes for an experience not unlike that of being a pinball armed with a railgun. The visuals are fun too: a kind of cartoon Tron with pigmen. Oh, and it’s free.
