Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

Cutting edge games often age poorly. Past a certain point, it can be tough to see what all the excitement was about in the first place. With so much fuss about Star Citizen though, I think it’s worth remembering that Wing Commander III wasn’t simply one of the most advanced games/interactive movies when it came out, but remains one of the bravest stories ever told. I don’t necessarily mean in terms of raw content here, but look. Put yourself in Chris Roberts’ shoes back in the early 90s. You’re making the most expensive game ever. A whole $4 million dollars! And what do you make?

One of the most depressing action movies ever, that’s what.

Kilrathi Gratuit: Wing Commander 3 Free On Origin

Serious stuff, spaceships.

Mark Hamill might be wearing those dusty old wizard robes again, but 20 years ago, the Wing Commander games were the only hope of Hamillaniacs to see him zapping about in spaceships and all that. Perhaps in the spirit of his renewed Star Warring, or patting Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts on the back for Star Citizen, or–who knows!–possibly even promoting their service, EA are giving away Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger free on Origin for a bit.

Meow! GOG Release Wing Commander III

He's no cat person.

When Good Old Games released their first batch of EA games, it seemed pretty odd that the Wing Commander included was Privateer. Fortunately they’ve now righted that wrong by previously sticking up Wing Commanders 1 and 2 for $6 for the pair, and today they’ve added the most famous of the series, Wing Commander III: Heart Of The Tiger. Or as it’s more commonly known, The One With Mark Hamill In It.
