In Celebration Of Perfectly Average Action Games

We don’t do scores on RPS, but sometimes we mourn for the inability to deploy a 7/10. The ur-score, the most double-edged of critical swords, the good but not great, the better than it deserves to be, the guilty pleasure, the bungled aspiration, the knows exactly what it is, the straight down the line. One score that can mean so much.

There is one particular type of 7/10 game that heralds joy, not disappointment: the solid, maybe ever so slightly wonky action game with no interest in being anything more than a solid action game.

Hidden Psyche Game: XIII Lost Identity

In a remarkable feat of reversed expectations, it was revealed that the new XIII game would not be a first person shooter. This is at a time when there’s a real chance that Peggle 2 will involve unicorn terrorists, a cover system and a screen-swallowing rainbow-themed HUD. Headshots = Ode To Joy and the rabbit is a wand-waving medic. So, an FPS becoming a puzzle game shouldn’t necessarily be reason to despair, right? It could allow narrative to dominate and make the world really stand out. And then a trailer occurs.

New XIII Game Is A Puzzler

I was happier then.
Clues about a new XIII game were recently discovered on the internet. I know! Imagine that. They have led to this Facebook page. Not a shooter this time – developers Anuman Interactive are making an “interactive story”, XIII: Lost Identity, that will help players get “close to the books”. A bit disappointing for fans of the shooter, I suppose, but maybe fans of the comics will get a kick out of it. Uh, That’s it for now. I guess the game will come out at some point, and all will be well.
