Kickstarter’s Head Of Games: “Kickstarter Fatigue Only Lasts Until Someone Sees Their Favourite Game Pop Up”

At this year’s Develop conference in Brighton, I grabbed an hour with keynote speaker Luke Crane, Head of Games at Kickstarter, to talk about the state of play of videogames on the crowdfunding platform in 2016. Discussed: what makes a good project now, the odds of making it, ‘Kickstarter fatigue’ and the question of glory days, Kickstarter’s reaction to funded projects that are not then released, the importance of community, how the press can be unhelpful and whether or not famous names are dominating the ecosystem at the expense of smaller developers.

Yogventures Backup Plan TUG In Trouble

Tugged off.

TUG appears to be, at a glance, another Minecraftbut — it’s Minecraft but not entirely squares and with some story bits. It is also, you might remember, the game that Minecrafty YouTubers Yogscast turned to after the crowdfunded Minecraftbut they officially endorsed, Yogventures, crashed after running out of money. Yogventures backers would get a TUG key and Yogscast would team up with the TUG team to do Yoggy things, was the idea. Now TUG, which was also crowdfunded, is struggling with money too. Developers Nerd Kingdom have laid off half their team and are delaying the game. Oh dear.

Sickstarters: Yogventures Dead, Confed. Express Postponed

Important note: none of this means Kickstarter is broken or doomed or mostly abused. It’s just two instances of something not working out, in these instances because the particular people involved made particular (and perhaps troubling) decisions that were not to their backers’ benefit. I retain plenty of faith in the Kickstarter model, but I would like to see more checks and balances.

Tale of woe the first: after two years in development and a long period of silence, the official Yogscast game has been confirmed cancelled, despite bringing in over half a million funbucks on Kickstarter in May 2012.
