Wot I Think: Pinball FX2 – Bethesda Pinball

DOOM, Skyrim and Fallout have been recreated as Pinball FX2 [official site] tables. Because nobody else at RPS has the flippin’ guts to take on such a massive task, I’ve spent a couple of hours with each, and have now judged them. Short version, I like them about as much as I like the games they’re based on, which means one is great, and the other two are a bit of a ballache. Skyrim, Fallout, and Doom tables flip into Pinball FX2

I’ve been playing a fair bit of actual physical pinball lately, having discovered a half-dozen machines across nearby pubs. My favourites put their themes into motion, like the NBA table where I get to launch the ball at a hoop (aided by mystical magnetism). The selection isn’t ideal, mind; I’m not much into basketball and Monopoly is so undesirable. No, digital pinball is a far better way to #engage with your favourite modern #brands in #brandball. They’re Coming Outta The Goddamn Balls!

Before my parents abandoned hope of me not growing up a degenerate and allowed me to watch murdermovies, I was fascinated by the local swimming pool’s Aliens arcade cabinet and Terminator 2 pinball table – Cool Things I couldn’t have. Ooh, the hours I spent watching bigger kids play or waggling the joystick as I pretended to play the demo! This… isn’t quite going where I wanted to. Let’s skip ahead to the bit where I explain that an Aliens table is coming to Pinball FX2 this month as DLC. Also coming are an Alien vs. Predator table (boo!) and an Alien: Isolation one too (ooh!).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Rolling To Pinball FX2

That there Star Wars: The Force Awakens was fun, wasn’t it? No, I shan’t spoil anything – though Adam, Alec, and Pip chatted about it if you want to know what Team RPS think. Me, I liked the bits where the robots and carpetman all made funny noises. I laughed every time. They really good! If your feelings for Star Wars run deeper, if you consider yourself a Warrer (or even a Warrie, bless your heart), you may be pleased to hear you’ll soon get to play with spaceballs. Portal Pinball. Need I Say More?

It takes a very special something to make me excited about a pinball game. I played Pokemon Pinball to death, way back when, but very few pinball games since have really captured my attention. Until now. Until the Aperture Science Heuristic Portal Pinball Device. It’s a Portal themed table for Zen Pinball [official site] and it looks fantastic. Rock It, Raccoon: Zen Pinball 2 Guardians Of The Galaxy

Zen Pinball 2 isn’t my digital pinball flavour of choice. I prefer the recreation of actual tables, even if sometimes imperfect, to the shiny Marvel and Star Wars licensed fare of Zen Studios. I still dabble in the lightshow occasionally though and a new Guardians of the Galaxy table seems like a good excuse to shake off the ball rust. Judging by the trailer (below), the new table will fall in the Zen tradition of ramp-heavy high-scoring theme park tables. Lots of bang for your buck (actually $2.99), but not necessarily a whole lot of skills and processes to learn.

Impressions: CastleStorm

Your vikings are no match for my mighty javelin.

Humour, much like relationships, sex and peaceful diplomatic resolution of conflict, is something a lot of games try but few manage to get right. If they aren’t crass or straight up unfunny, jokes in games can often feel out of sync with a hyper-serious shoot-the-mans focused universe or dry simulation. When they aren’t, the limitations of player interaction, voice triggers and animation prevent true greatness from shining through. What, ahem, “physics based destruction meets tower defense brawler” CastleStorm does is just a little bit different.
