UK-based blogchums Videogaming247 were clever enough to remember to go to Leipzig (unlike us) and consequently they’ve come back with special Far Cry information. Ubisoft Montreal are, apparently, already in the initial stages of the third Far Cry game. Here’s the interesting bit:
“There are still things we want to do with the African setting, and I think it’s safe to say we’ll continue to explore it. That said, we might find something new and compelling about the Antarctic setting that wants us to make the next game there, but honestly, we’re still at the preliminary stages.”
If Far Cry 2 ends up being good I rather hope this third game has a brief iteration time, rather than being another four-year project.

Looking forward to this. My PC less so.

An antarctic based FPS. Not much of them. Wasn’t The Thing in Antarctica?
Either way, it would be great.

An Antarctica setting could be good so long as it didn’t revolve entirely around a “and your character totally needs to stay warm!” mechanic.

The landscape would be a little bland, wouldn’t it?
I’d also like to see it sooner rather than later, even if it is the Antarctic.

great, if fc2 doesn’t have aliens or monsters you can bet “3 will.

No, I think Ubi Montreal want to keep things “no monsters”.

Far Cry 2 will be awesome. It’s fate.
For Far Cry 3, I was kind of hoping for South America, though South Eastern Europe (think the Balkans and the Goergia stuff) and some of the unstable parts of Asia could work too.
Arctic would be pretty lame IMO, not enough variety. It’s either snowy plains or snowy forest.

Wait, how about Australia? Has any kind of free-roamer been set there in the outback/inland regions? With a game set in the inland area of Australia you wouldn’t have time to fight baddies because you’d be too busy watching out for spiders which have inexplicably evolved potent enough venom to drop a small town.

I’m sure Ubisoft doesn’t want the next game to be a four-year-cycle as well. They already have the new mood and engine built for it though.
Kinda breaks my heart that it’s highly unlikely the PC will be the lead platform that time around.

@Jim:
If only Crytek’s tastes were that grounded.

How about Venus, it could revolve entirely around a “and your character totally needs to stay cool!” mechanic.

How about the exclusion zone round Chernobyl?
Or Lancashire?
Actually that might be a bit of a downer, best off sticking to Chernobyl…

@ Sucram: Now that I’d play. :D

The real monster is man.

Africa is one of the biggest continents on the planet, with a huge variety of environment types. Antarctica kind of only has one environment. So in the name of providing a wide range of locations, this seems a very well choice.
“No, I think Ubi Montreal want to keep things “no monsters””
Thanks god for that.

Isn’t it a bit early to be discussing this? Maybe they could wait until a few weeks after release.

It might be cool if some sort of alien magic flash-froze the landscape!

i think a cool setting wold be Mexican/Caribbean setting where you could switch from desert to jungle to tropical island maybe fighting drug dealers or weapons dealers again
