Today’s Greatest Thing Ever: Elevator Source

By John Walker on January 16th, 2012 at 4:51 pm.

This has made my day.

Elevators, or as we Brits call them, dangleboxes, get a fair showing in gaming. Very few FPS titles will let you reach their final bossmonster without having had at least one go on the world’s slowest ride, giving you a moment’s pause, before they inevitably shudder to a halt as you’re ripped out of the side of the building by something with more tentacles than manners. But until now (to my knowledge at least, inevitable person who knows of a game on the Amiga) they’ve yet to receive a game dedicated just to them. And that’s what we have in the Half-Life 2 mod, Elevator: Source. YES.

Created by the undeniable geniuses at Pixeltail Games, Elevator: Source is a no-holds-barred elevator simulator, that requires Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and Garry’s Mod be installed on your machine. And I really suggest you do.

Because right now I’m in the lift with a man called Lizard Wizard, someone called Barney whose head is on fire, and a skellington called Jaykin. Watching through the elevator doors as a factory line of dancing pixel robots go past, over a pit of fire. Before the doors close and we’re off somewhere else. Barney and Jay keep giving each other furtive glances. And now we’ve stopped at the seaside, where Derek in his yellow rubber ring and blue suit has just got on board.

This is bloody brilliant. For the first time in my life, I desperately want to play a game in multiplayer. It has made me laugh out loud so many times.

Not convinced? Here are a group of people playing it together for 45 minutes.

Huge thanks to John B for the tip.

Game of the year 2012. Calling it now.

    • King Toko says:

Maybe contender for mod of the year.

    • Fierce says:

It won Mod of the Year 2012 Runner-up, at the very least, the moment “Build That Wall” started playing.

      (Timestamp 16:03 for the impatient)

    • Machinations says:

and here I thought it was a remake of elevator action…

      boo

  2. King Toko says:

Is it basically like a virtual museum/ride?

  3. Ginger Yellow says:

Does it have the music from Mass Effect?

  4. King Toko says:

I love the emotes coughing, watch action etc.

  5. Richard Cobbett says:

It’s like Incredible Games: The Game!

(Also: Elevator Action, and to a lesser extent Sim Tower.)

  6. Unaco says:

Elevator Action, and its sequel (Elevator Action II). An old (early ’80s?) Arcade action/platformer.

Youtube video of the 1st level.

Mission Elevator on the Atari ST!

    • King Toko says:

      Elevator Rush.

    • Fiwer says:

John should be fired for not thinking of Elevator Action.

    • ElPoco says:

Elevator action wasn’t exactly dedicated to elevators so John isn’t completely wrong but it had elevator in the title and they played an important part (especially in the first game, Elevator Action Returns was a really nice platform/shooter but Elevator it’s less about elevators) so he should have least have mentioned it.

  7. John Walker says:

No one else has said it yet?

This game will really lift your spirits.

  8. Mashley says:

Urrgh I wanted to play this but then I saw it needs Gary’s Mod :( Woe is me

    • RagingLion says:

Dammit!! Me too. Now I regret never having picked up Garry’s Mod when going for ridicuously cheap in some sale. I did not foresee these circumstances. :(

    • jonfitt says:

Yeah. I don’t have (or really want) GMOD. Pity.

    • utzel says:

I can clearly remember myself sitting there during the steam holiday sale: “Mhh, I won HL2 Episode 2. I don’t play Gmod anymore, let’s just give it to a friend.”

The video is only loading slowly right now, so how good is the elevator music?

    • zeroskill says:

      HOW can you not have Gmod. Thats depressing… ;___;

    • Marar Patrunjica says:

I have most of the Source games, including HL2:EP2, but no Garry’s Mod sadly, never did find it interesting to be honest, too bad, I always like these kinds of mods.

  9. olemars says:

Is it so difficult to stand still for one full second?

Pro tip: Bring up watch & slap to toss them up into the air (even unlock secret areas!)

  11. Danny says:

I’ve spent a large proportion of the last hour of my life watching this, and I have no regrets.

  12. BAshment says:

    49.59 in fact.

  13. Moni says:

I feel like it would be funnier if the elevator was half the size and you could collide with other people, and a stop button on the control panel.

    Also a fart button.

Just wanted to say that the first two sentences of this article are why I come to RPS.

    • Fire_Storm says:

      Yes!

I will now translate “elevator” to danglebox for all of my American friends.

Every time I read that line I involuntarily chuckle. Thanks RPS.

  15. McDan says:

Thanks John, I really thought I was going to get some work done today. What a fool I was.

  16. moondog548 says:

The climax was so worth it.

    THRILLS! :D

  17. rammeoxxornms says:

Sweet gibley giblets! Now I know why my coal conversion gave me a 33% off Valve coupon – to buy Garry’s Mod and play this masterpiece! Oh benevolent Lord Steam, you work in mysterious ways. Anyone fancy a game tonight?

  18. Hurion says:

    Someone should RP this.

    Nero says:

The mod and that video is great. I think they should put this quote on their umm boxart: “The most fun part of this game is realizing you have a cough and then wait five minutes so you can do it again.”

  20. n1zm0 says:

i hope they add more floors!

  21. Tei says:

I want to see a quickrun of this gaemz.

    Wow, nice mod :D
About 1 hour playing, haha. So random :D

  22. hobblinharry says:

I copied the addon zip into my sourcemods folder but cant get the game to show up :(

    • Snuffy the Evil says:

This is for Garry’s Mod, it’s not standalone! If you own it, merge the addons folder with your steam/steamapps/username/garrysmod/garrysmod/addons folder, and merge the gamemodes folder (it’s a separate download!) with the gamemodes folder.

When you get in-game, click on the Elevator map, then the wrench icon, and set the game mode to “Elevator”. Then you can play.

  27. Mrice says:

I just spent the better part of the last 4 hours, trying and failing to set up a co-op game with a friend.

How on earth the men in this video pulled it off i will never know.

  28. JaTochNietDan says:

This is some really cool stuff, I never thought of this idea before.

It gave me some really interesting ideas for a game with actual game-play based on an elevator and a series of rooms. I think I might look into making some sort of small source game out of it :p

    • PredOborG says:

There is same idea in the movie “Inception”. It may started since the creation of the elevator.

  29. Tei says:

Very fun mod, the reactions of people hare hilarious.

  30. michal.lewtak says:

    Directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

  31. Servizio says:

why have I watched 15 minutes of this

    • DevilSShadoW says:

      15? HAHA!
I’ve watched the full video and enjoyed every second of it.

  32. Kaminobob says:

The reference to the fantastic Lost Planet 2 LP at 18:15 absolutely slaughtered me… with laughter.

  33. KantusDemon says:

I’ve made a Facebook page for the mod by the way.

  34. MeestaNob says:

I watched all the way to the end, and I’m amazed a wrecking ball didn’t go through the apartment as a grand finale.

  35. Frankie The Patrician[PF] says:

I cannot wait for some mod with more British appeal – cross-country train transportation! Oh, some white collar forgot his notebook with unencrypted government data again…

  36. faelnor says:

    BTW, it’s not a HL2 mod, it’s a Garry’s Mod mode.

  37. Wild_Wolf says:

    TV part was awesome :D

  38. Eraysor says:

My day was made a thousand times over when I realised one of the elevator tracks is an a capella version of the Mystic Cave Zone music from Sonic 2 ^_^

  39. Beardy says:

I’ve never owned, or wanted, Garry’s Mod. But now I have it, just so I can play this (and also because I still had a 50% off Valve products voucher left over).
