Die Nasty: Bigpoint’s A Game Of Thrones MMO

By Jim Rossignol on February 29th, 2012 at 3:08 pm.

Wow, i can't wait to play that.
Could the Game Of Thrones MMO being about breeding? I ask because of this: “Bigpoint’s design goal is to capture the show’s compelling drama and action and create a visceral gaming experience via an unprecedented level of visual fidelity. The bloodthirsty struggle for power, corruption, and deception will persist. To ensure survival of their dynasty, players must master combat and politics.” Because, you know, that’s not all you need to do to ensure survival of your dynasty, is it? I mean there are certainly other aspects to it, which I personally have been pursuing for years… Anyway. Probably not, eh? No.

The game will be browser-based, so we’re speculating F2P, the website is up here, and that’s the first image up above. Not all that inspiring, but the only way is up, eh? More on this will be coming out of GDC, apparently. So that’s good.

Been saying for years and years that a dynasty system would be the best way for an MMO to implement permadeath. Doubt it’ll be used like such for a big IP, but there’s always Salem.

It’d be awesome if stats on birth were randomized and there was a “genetic” system in place so that the combination of two high stat players would lead to a greater likelyhood of having babies with high stats.

Let’s bring arranged marriages and eugenics to MMOs. That’d be awesome.

    • kevmscotland says:

Infinity Blade on the iOS has a kind of Dynasty system thing going.

    • Cerzi says:

The alternative I’d had in mind, to avoid the awkwardness of having to get in bed with fellow neckbeards, was to abstract the whole thing into some kind of alien race that exchanges/combines DNA in a more mechanical way. Because the idea of having to sleep with all your male guildmates to progress is just one of the inevitably bad outcomes.

    • Juan Carlo says:

      Nah.

There has to be constant neck beard on neck beard sex going on. That’s what makes it hilarious.

I want a game which would motivate two geeky 20 something men to engage in elaborate courting and mating rituals with each other in order to ensure that they find another player with just the right “genetic” material to make them respawn as a stronger character after they die.

I’d even limit the number of females who spawn with high stats to make them a more scarce commodity, allowing men in game to fight over them.

This could be the most fascinating social/video game experiment ever if done right.

    • Boothie says:

@ Juan Carlo damn that last post made me piss myself laughing XD

    • Drinking with Skeletons says:

      @Juan Carlo:

That was sounding pretty damn hot until you got all Master Race on us.

Still, I’m sure there would be plenty of Renly fans on the servers to compensate…

    • Juan Carlo says:

      @Drinking Skeleteons:

Well regarding the eugenics thing, I just think that “Eugenics” is just where an MMO which implemented such a thing would immediately go. MMOs who give players any sort of freedom tend to go to some pretty awful moral places pretty quickly.

So you’d instantly have players trying to hook up with only the strongest players to make their line the best. I could even see things like post-birth abortions taking place, where players hook up with another player and have thousands of babies, killing each one until they find the one with the best randomly generated stats.

      Again, it would be awesome.

Anyhow, random character generation is one place that I would like to see an MMO go (aloing with permadeath). It would be the easiest way to make the game more like life (where we aren’t all born with equal “rolls” so to speak), and also open up all sorts of crazy possibilities that not many (if any) MMOs have done yet.

Let’s face it, you’d just produce as many offspring as possible and choose the best ones.

    • sky_in_flames says:

      @aircool
That’s the Frey way of handling things…

  2. kevmscotland says:

You lost me at “Bigpoint’s design goal is to capture the show’s …….”

Dont these people realise its a book series, and that the books actually have way more content to work off of.

    • Werthead says:

Yes, but to my knowledge they don’t have the book rights, only the rights to the TV show, so they can only use what’s been established on the TV show.

  3. Inigo says:

compelling drama and action and create a visceral gaming experience via an unprecedented level of visual fidelity.

How to say a lot without really saying anything at all.

    • MiniMatt says:

You’re right, that’s an awfully long winded way of saying “Um, see there’s a story. And graphics, we have graphics. Even a pixel or two.”

  4. Duke of Chutney says:

“Bigpoint’s design goal is to capture the show’s …….” “unprecedented level of visual fidelity”

So presumably the players will partake in incest and rape?

    edit; oh an infanticide

  5. Brun says:

The best Game of Thrones game to date is Crusader Kings 2, and it’s not even a Game of Thrones game.

    • matnym says:

I was about to say that :)

I think a Game of Thrones mod is in the works for Crusader Kings 2 so soon we’ll have proper Winterfell, Starks, Lannisters and what not.

    • Dom_01 says:

      I agree completely.

Game developers should focus on making good mechanics and gameplay before worrying about a tie-in license. Crusader Kings does not share the ASoIaF license, yet it’s strong gameplay and mechanics makes it the best ASoIaF game.

  6. BobbyKotickIsTheAntichrist says:

Oh brother. I hope these cocksuckers come up with some novel ideas, because this IP definitely doesn’t fit or deserve the crappy standard F2P MMO treatment.

  7. Reapy says:

Man, sometimes I hate when things get popular. Its like, yeah, HBO show is freaken awesome, but now we get to deal with a long slew of dumbshit games that do their best to dilute the artistry of the original world. Same with lord of the rings, movies were awesome, but then you have ring wraiths plunging down the street holding a McDonalds happy meal, and you have to stop and go, well, I don’t think Tolkien saw it that way…

The only game that could even remotely do the series justice is crusader kings 2.

  8. Valvarexart says:

“experience via an unprecedented level of visual fidelity.”
    “The game will be browser-based”

Now, how does that work? :o

They forgot to mention your ability to pay for micro-transactions along with the mastery of combat and politics.

  9. Boozebeard says:

Screen shot remind me of mount and blade, a lot. Game of Thrones mount and blade would probably be awesome.

  10. Drinking with Skeletons says:

Alright, what in the hell is going on with this IP’s video game rights? I’d assumed Cyanide got their license because whoever they approached didn’t know jack shit about video game developers–and apparently couldn’t be bothered to do some googling and check out reviews and what not–but apparently that person knew enough about video games to split the rights so that different companies could work on different games–hell, different types of games–to maximize potential profit.

    It’s just weird.

    • Werthead says:

When Martin sold the rights to the TV series, this also included sub-rights for all merchandising based on the TV series, including computer games. That is a separate deal to the one he’d already made with Cyanide for them to make games based on the books and the books alone. Although HBO then reached a deal with Cyanide allowing them to use TV show imagery on the roleplaying game, just to make it a bit more confusing.

Rule of thumb, we’re at the same stage that LORD OF THE RINGS was back in 2001-02, when the book and movie game rights were held by totally different companies and we got games based on the books and games based on the movies and everyone got really confused until EA bought the rights to both and combined them.

By your IP Contracts combined, I am CAPTAIN PROFIT

      GO PROFIT!

  11. hench says:

Looking through the developers portfolio I’d guess that this wont end up good.

Also, where did you get that image? It’s not on the website

  12. elfbarf says:

    Please stop.

  13. Velvetmeds says:

Could the Game Of Thrones MMO BEING about breeding?

    huh? being?

  14. Davie says:

Let the running of a reasonably interesting IP straight into the ground continue!

Really, is it unreasonable of me to prefer no ASOIAF games with the chance of good ones over mediocre games with discouraged developers who will now never do anything worthwhile with the property?

  15. Futhark says:

So how is this MMO going to handle the frequent rape?
