Start The Week: Randal’s Monday

By John Walker on December 19th, 2012 at 8:00 pm.

“Are you aware of shameless BTDT-rip off Randal’s Monday?” asked Size Five Games’ Dan Marshall. “Promising trailer, looks gorgeous. Deserves some RPS love.” He’s not wrong. While my brain still requires an adjustment period whenever a point and click adventure features text instead of voices, as soon as it’s flipped the switch it’s hard to find a happier place for John’s brain, and this trailer takes me there.

Trust me, give it that minute for cranial conversion, and then you’re in:

Randal's Monday Trailer (English) by RandalsMonday

My extensive research hasn’t been able to ascertain when it’s out, but I’ve nagged developers Juanan Pascual Albarranch and Troy Pascual Gomez to find out more. It does look like they’re after some help to get it finished, however. Hurry up, I want to play it!

Who the hell is Walter? And what’s his story? I NEED TO KNOW!

Great trailer, art style looks amazing! Quite interested to see what the story will be. The puzzle seems of the far fetched variety though, shame really.

    • noom says:

Trailer was indeed excellent. The fact that the only apparent puzzle on display seemed utterly obtuse was worrying though…

      • S Jay says:

        I like those.

I am really not from that school of “oh no, strange solutions to strange puzzles”. I sometimes get frustrated, sure, but mostly not.

        • frightlever says:

So you’re happy to simply exhaust possibilities by combining everything with everything else, everywhere, instead of using logic? Interesting.

      • The Random One says:

I agree. An adventure game shouting “WOW! YOU HAVE TO COMBINE THE RUBBER DUCKY WITH THE HANGER AND THEN WITH THE BROOMSTICK!” to me is the equivalent of a shooter going “TOTALLY REALISTIC US ARMY SIMULATOR AGAINST THE EVIL BROWN MEN OF THE DESERT”.

        • somnolentsurfer says:

Yeah, except “combine rubber ducky with other things to get distant thing” is just another version of the Threepwood Street gag. Shameless BTDT-rip off indeed.

  3. Discopanda says:

    This game looks incredible.

  4. rawrty says:

Got a chuckle out of me with, “hold on Charlie, Bill can’t help us this time.” Looks quite good!

  5. dontnormally says:

How are they using M.I.A. and other tracks?
They can’t possibly have been able to license such things…

    • dontnormally says:

Also, what is BTDT? You gotta ‘splain yourself, RPS.

      • Choca says:

BTDT = Ben There, Dan That, a mostly insane adventure game.

        • epmode says:

This isn’t being created by Size Five/Zombie Cow, is it? The Ben and Dan games are among the very few genuinely funny adventure games I’ve seen since Lucasarts, which is a shame since the genre is so perfect for comedy.

FTA: “Are you aware of shameless BTDT-rip off Randal’s Monday?” asked Size Five Games’ Dan Marshall.

So, no, not being made by Size Five, but they apparently brought it to RPS’ attention.

          • epmode says:

They are silly gentlemen so I figured that could be them being silly.

          • Axyl says:

Apparently, they were just being Gentlemen.

            I like that.
I like BTDT and I LOVE how this game looks, too. :D

      • Randomer says:

I would guess it stands for “Ben There, Dan That”, a point-and-click adventure game with a similar art style.

  6. DonJefe says:

I love the Monkey Island feeling to the game. Very promising indeed.

  7. spindaden says:

    Threepwood st station XD Brilliant.

Excellently edited trailer. Game looks a bit of alright too

Was that the music from Maniac Mansion? Something about the snare drum is very familiar.

  9. Armante says:

Count me in – this looks great.
Keen to see how this one develops :)

  10. caddyB says:

I’M THROWING MONEY AT THE SCREEN BUT NOTHING IS HAPPENING
DO I NEED TO COMBINE MONEY WITH ANYTHING FIRST
WHY IS THERE NO GAMEFAQS PAGE FOR THIS

    • The Random One says:

You have to use the screen with the money, not the money with the screen

  11. mckertis says:

    BTDT what ?

  12. frenz0rz says:

I am… intrigued. Think I might keep an eye on this one.

  13. requisite0 says:

    USEWITHFACE

    • The Random One says:

If only you could use those things together.
(That would be an excellent ‘failed combination’ line if someone ever makes an RPS adventure game.)

  14. Premium User Badge LTK says:

What is this strange and alien video player that provides a window into such adventure-gaming goodness?

  15. Randals Monday says:

    Hello RPS community!

First of all we want to thank you for your support. We really appreciate it.

We are very happy to announce that Randal’s Monday is officially in development. Though it is still on an early stage, we are hoping to have the final version ready in about a year.

Thank you again, and stay tuned for new updates!
