Giveaway: 5000 copies of Ahnayro: The Dream World

Ahnayro: The Dream World [official site] is a research-based puzzle game set in a dream-logic world. It was one of the game’s featured in John’s Bleeding Edges series earlier this year, which highlighted games which blurred the edges (geddit?) between game and real world by requiring you to research real people and places and facts in among the fictional elements.

And now we’re giving 5000 copies of the first episode away for free, when normally it costs £7/$9.

Here’s what John said about it:

I’m so delighted that I picked this game to play next after delving back into the wonderful world of The Stone, because in many ways it feels like a spiritual successor, its beguiling simplicity of presentation hiding the potential for hours of time-losing research, rabbit holes leading to rabbit warrens of misdirection and accidentally acquired knowledge, and those glorious moments of connection and realisation. And it layers these abstruse explorations over one another in a very smart structure. It’s not quite solid enough yet, but everything’s in place for it to become so.

And here’s a trailer:

Thanks! Looking forward to checking it out.

  2. Intrinsic says:

Wow ended already? did they go that fast? or did a bot snipe them all.

  3. JimThePea says:

    Well, that was quick…

  4. dahools says:

Thanks, will try this in the new year.

    Aerothorn says:

    Yeesh, gone really fast!

  6. dahools says:

Got one at 14:15 perhaps a bot did hoover em up then because not doubting the hiveminds popularity, but 5000 unique visitors to that post that quick seems unlikely.

  7. JuicySteak says:

Insteant Giveaways like these get instantly posted to subreddits like /r/freegamefindings or /r/freegamesonsteam . There are thousands and thousands of users only waiting for a game to be postet there. 5k keys is pretty low considering that over 100k reddit users storm onto them.

    • dahools says:

Never thought of that. Perhaps it should be for registered users next time then of something because that was a small window for RPS users and fans to get a little bit of a reward for using the site.

But on the flip side I spose subredits like that will bring potential new user to sites they may not know of so. . .

      • JuicySteak says:

To be honest: Most ppl who got the keys dont give a damn where they go it from.

        • Landiss says:

Sad part is that they probably don’t give a damn what game they get.

          • dahools says:

I know, I generally look at something and see if it is something I would be interested in trying or new. same with the competitions on loads of sites I visit at the moment, I only enter the ones I actually want the prize from. I know folk who must have everything and click they will never use what it is they are getting.

      • Psychomorph says:

“for RPS users and fans to get a little bit of a reward for using the site…”

        …with AdBlock off/whitelisted.

  8. darrrrkvengeance says:

I picked up Ahnayro as part of an Alice and Smith bundle several months back when I was purchasing The Black Watchmen. It’s alright, I suppose, but I feel the “dream interpretation” framing narrative is as much as anything an excuse to be willfully obscure. I do enjoy TBW, however; and so it’s nice to have Ahnayro as an extension of the TBW universe. It’s not necessary something I’d recommend as a standalone experience, however — except perhaps as an ARG-lite to see whether you like the genre/experience of doing internet research outside of the game client in order to progress.

  9. neotribe says:

I snagged a key and am enjoying it, although I agree the framing is needlessly obtuse.

It does have me considering picking up TBW, it got me to check out their promo site for their upcoming Niteteam4 thing, and I’m tempted to dig up my TSW account. So, hey.
