Dungeons 3 keeps on keepin' on

Dungeon Keeper-y

Realmforge are diving back into the Dungeon Keeper-ish world of Dungeons, announcing Dungeons 3 [Steam page] for autumn. It's a real-time strategy game about an evil overlord building a dungeon to raise, train, and protect dastardly minions then sending 'em out to raid and ravage the shiny happy overworld - Dungeon Keeper meets Warcraft. Our Alec quite liked Dungeons 2 so, sure, a new game building on that sounds good. This time, it'll pack a two-player co-op mode and Realmforge say the overworld RTS bits are "fully reworked" too.

Dungeons 3 will continue the Dungeon Lord's war against all that's good and happy. Here's your blurb:

"Unleash your dark side by creating a unique underground dungeon from a huge array of rooms, traps and structures. Raise the most terrifying army the world has ever seen, by choosing from despicable creatures such as orcs, succubae, zombies and much, much more. Then, once you have built your forces, emerge from the darkness and guide your army to the light of the overworld, where you will corrupt the land and dispatch anything even vaguely heroic, cute or unicorn-shaped. And in a first for the Dungeons series, experience randomly generated levels, so that no two sessions are alike – never-ending fun for any evil conqueror!"

The overworld action in Dungeons 2 had its problems, so an overhaul sounds good, but Alec did still dig it:

"I worried initially that this was Dungeons 2 biting off far more than it could chew, but other than much of the overworld/RTS aspect involving too much slow schlepping around a place filled with artificial barriers, it gets away with it. What Dungeon Keeper always lacked was this sense that you raised an army of darkness then razed the happy, pastoral land above with it – the latter essentially happened off-camera. ... It's quite a treat both to have your creatures go smash up a cutsey Warcraftian town and to get to take temporary control of them and their powers in a way that's far more practical than DK's atmospheric but gimmicky Possession spell."

Anyway! Dungeons 3 is coming to Windows, Mac, and Linux this autumn.
