7 Billion Humans is World of Goo dev’s new programming game

The robots are coming, and they’re coming for YOUR JOB – so proclaims the trailer for Tomorrow Corporation’s new game 7 Billion Humans. You might know Tomorrow Corporation as the studio behind Little Inferno or World of Goo, but they’ve just announced a follow-up to their 2015 programming game Human Resource Machine.

HRM was all about automating a single office worker’s tasks using simple(ish) programming commands, but 7 Billion Humans kicks things up a notch and enters the wonderful and intimidating world of parallel computing. Not sure what that means? Me neither! Let’s try and figure it out together.

Can Videogames Teach You Programming?

When I tell people I’m a programmer, I get that look. The glazed eyes, the polite smile, the clear desire to change topic. If I’m lucky, I’ll get pitched on an idea for the next killer mobile app that my conversation partner insists will make us rich; if I’m less lucky, I’ll get wrangled into providing free tech support for the rest of my life. The thing is, though, as impossible as it might sound, programming can be more fun than people realise. Fun enough to warrant its own video game genre, even.

Just how educational are these games, though? Is it really possible to become a programmer by playing games? I dug through Steam and came away with three promising candidates. Let’s take a look at them, and see whether they can really teach you skills to pay the bills.

Little Inferno Devs Crank Up Human Resource Machine

Little Inferno showed what we do with consumer products at home – we burn them in a nice big fire for giggles so we can get more stuff – but where do products come from? Developers Tomorrow Corporation are now showing us a sliver of where the magic happens, revealing the Human Resource Machine [official site]. Their latest is a programming puzzle game, where you use simple syntax to program a hapless office worker to perform tasks. They do so enjoy being micromanaged, those wee drones.

Tidy up your tie and polish your shoes, as Human Resources Corporation is now out.

If the sinister corporate headline weren’t clue enough, the googly-eyed people should give it away: Tomorrow Corporation have a new game coming. Them lot behind Little Inferno (as well as having the picture-drawing half of World of Goo team 2D Boy) today revealed their latest puzzler, Human Resources Machine [official site]. It’s all about programming.

Arriving this summer, Human Resources Machine will give you the giddy thrill of working in an office which works like programming a computer using boxes and trays. If you don’t know how to code, chillax: they say that’s not a problem. Come have a look at the trailer.
