Ridealong: Stalking a wounded deer with the hunter

Ridealong is our monthly feature where Brendan travels deep into game worlds to meet, question and journey with the inhabitants that dwell within. This time, a real-world hunter takes him deer tracking and duck shooting in theHunter.

There’s a man making duck noises in the swamp. He raises a tubular horn to his lips and makes the duck sound again and again, looking at the sky as his spine cranes back at an unnatural angle. At his feet a sandy Labrador sits quietly. The man puts the horn away and gets out a shotgun. The next flock of mallards is coming in to land.

Ridealong: The Last King Of Wurm Online

Ridealong is our monthly feature where Brendan travels deep into game worlds to meet, question and journey with the inhabitants that dwell within. This time, the 13-year-old urchin of Wurm Online who swore to become King and lived up to the oath.

The man arrives, riding a white horse and clad in splendid armour. When I hover my mouse over the man, his username is accompanied by the title “Dragonslayer”. But his rare title and treasured armour is misleading. This shining knight lives on a tiny farm in the countryside. The horse he is riding is described by the game’s text as “fat” and “old”. And it isn’t even his horse. He has “borrowed” it from the village next to his farm, along with another fat foal and an old bull, which follow along behind him on a lead. Some might say Wossoo is a sorry sight, for a man who used to be King.

Ridealong: Going Under The Wing Of A Flight Instructor

Terror at 2000 feet

Ridealong is our monthly feature where Brendan travels deep into game worlds to meet, question and journey with the inhabitants that dwell within. This time, he meets a flight instructor for a ‘virtual airline’ and sweats as he learns his way around the cockpit in Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

We are at 2000 feet when we begin to stall. I am absolutely certain I am going to crash this plane. We are tumbling to earth and all I can hear is the harsh buzz of the stall warning, telling me everything about this is wrong. But then I hear it, the voice of Dan “TX Hills”. He has a calm voice. As far as he’s concerned, everything has gone exactly the way it was supposed to.

Ridealong: The Underground Fight Clubs Of Dark Souls III

When Dingle arrives at the circular ruins outside the old church, the first thing he sees is a man in a crown, holding a flaming torch – it is the man he must kill. But the crowned man shows no fear, he simply waves and beckons him over. Dingle is curious. He approaches with caution and looks into the grassy arena below, where he sees two dark spirits – red phantoms like himself – taking swings at each other. The man in the crown begins silently dropping glowing stones everywhere, one by one. There are two more red phantoms squatting on the stone ledge nearby, quietly watching the duel below.

Dingle (full name: Dingle Dongle) looks at the fight, then at the man he is supposed to kill, then at the spectators. Then he does something that more and more dark spirits in Lothric are doing. He puts his weapon away, he sits down and he waits his turn.
