In the grand tradition of mods gone pro, such as Counter-Strike, Killling Floor and that unplayable Doom 2 level with 354 Cacodemons I made back in 1995, fantasy-themed Civilization IV uber-total conversion Fall From Heaven is going standalone.
How so? We don’t know. With what engine? We don’t know. With which publisher? We don’t know. WE DON’T KNOW. We know only that it is, in theory, enormously good news – Fall From Heaven has accrued the kind of status that a good 50% of people you mention Civ 4 to will immediately name-check it, so it’s not really a surprise that this is happening. There are any number of specialist strategy PC publishers who would be insane not to pick it up. Trailer of the still-existent mod version below, trailer fans.
Nice snow leopard.
If this means they could get around engine limitations and make it a proper Master of Magic follow-up, then that’s fantastic.

Not much a fan of Fall from Heaven. But I’m biased. I love Civ too much to want play a modded version. I end up always returning to my beloved original.
But this move however does hopefully bring a sort of successor to Fantasy General back into our computers 14 years after the fact. I say it was about bloody time.

FFH2 was good except for the fact that they couldn’t make the AI even halfway competent with the new mechanics. Especially the mage-bombarding-a-city-with-fireballs-from-2-squares-away-until-it’s-almost-dead tactic.

Great news. Civ IV + FFH2 is pretty much the ultimate strategy game. Despite not knowing a thing about this new Fall from Heaven-game, it’s already on my top five list of most anticipated games.
Also funny that this news comes on the same day that Master of Magic is being released on GOG…

It’s curious that Kael said exactly this sort of thing was very unlikely to happen about a year ago. I wonder if Firaxis actually coaxed him into doing this, which would be all sorts of awesome.
And speaking of awesome! Enterable dungeons! Inventory management! Taking over the Infernals (or the Mercurians, I guess, if you’re a PUSSY) in multiplayer without everyone having to reconnect! I can’t WAIT!
(I think I played more hours of FFH than I did of Civ IV proper. Both stats should be in the triple digits, though. I LOVE FFH2, and I love Civ 4. Happy days!)

FFH2 is probably one of my most long followed and favourite mods, I’m hoping they’ll keep it true to the very complicated but rewarding game it is atm- rather that trying to hit the mass market with the sorts of “elegant simplifications” we’ve heard about in civ 5…
For those who havent play’d it but own civ4+expansions you really should, even if your not a fan of the fantasy setting you should check it out. The shear amount of material, and the really unique sides are pretty damn awesome!

How are they going to pull this off? I like the mod, but they “borrow” TREMENDOUS amounts of content from every source imaginable. Though I suppose it’s not the first time it’s been sold, as it was included with one of the Civ IV expansions, so perhaps it’s just a matter of stripping out/replacing all the objectionable parts.

That’s not quite true. There is a Fall From Heaven-related scenario mod included in Beyond the Sword, but it’s not Fall From Heaven proper by a long shot. It’s more of a puzzly RPG thing.

Have you tried Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic? Not exactly the same as Master of Orion but a great and very similar game nonetheless!

I’ve played (and really enjoyed) FFh but something always irked me… what’s with the bizarro names? Really, I know it’s fantasy and suspension of disbelief is mandatory and all that but some of the names are simply copies of other RPG’s and sound… I don’t know, oddly placed.
Anyway, good luck to them, the more turn based MoM-styled games the merrier!
(and Disciples III sure is taking it’s sweet sweet time to have a bloody western release, stinking russians!)

Kael’s project has been cancelled. Apparently, he’s set his eyes on FfH3 – likely for Civ V. Which makes this an interesting case of bad things leading to much better things.
Somebody should interview the guy quick.

I found that the WildMana modmod sorts out a lot of issues with FFH2 without making a big mess of it and changing it too much like Fall Further and some of other modmods do
