A-ha, A Demo: Take On Take On Helicopters

By Alec Meer on November 30th, 2011 at 3:40 pm.

that's me stumbling away

What? What? It can’t really be just me who thinks of A-ha’s finest hour whenever Bohemia’s Take On Helicopters is mentioned, can it? Hmmph. Perhaps I can break the association by writing about the chopper sim’s new demo, which is out now. At 3.6GB it’s faintly monstrous, but the contents sound highly generous. You should take it on, take it on. It’ll be gone, in a day or twooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

(It won’t be gone in a day or two). Full contents and moving images below.

· Free Flight mode
· Light and medium helicopters
· 30 x 30 km section of the Seattle terrain
· 2 singleplayer scenarios
· 3 time trial courses
· 3 training scenarios
· 1 multiplayer scenario
· A powerful 2D scenario editor (limited version, does not allow saving or loading)

All set above the skies of Seattle, apparently. Here’s a trailer for the full game:

Oh, sorry, sorry. That is the best video, though. But I meant this:

Here’s what we made of Take On Helicopters, in case you missed it.

Proof positive that shifting through garbage will get you..True love or a decent helicopter sim.

  3. Kaira- says:

Well, the trailer works pretty well with the song.

  4. stahlwerk says:

Sir, I heartily disagree with that song being A-Ha’s finest hour.

  5. foda500orama says:

Duran Duran is the better band.

I digg more the literal version than the original one. I think I’m spoiled.

“What are they doing with our magic frame??”

    • Jahkaivah says:

      Hang on…

      Magic frames….

      People being abducted from bars….

Guy wearing leather jackets who fights bad guys with his Pipe Wrench….

      Of course….

Take On Me is set in the Prey universe.

You seem to be having trouble locating the correct trailer, Alec. Here you go: http://tubedubber.com/#Gf4kbuOhwgM:XPIVNrI7Kp0:0:100:0:0:1

    • Danny252 says:

That fits far too well to be coincidence. I claim BI secretly made the trailer with that soundtrack and dubbed over it.

  9. magnus says:

Take me on? Take me away more like!

  10. Baka says:

As a German, I was really surprised to be able to watch the first video.

    • Jekhar says:

I’m equally suprised whenever i see a music video which has escaped the mighty GEMA banhammer.

  11. Eclipse says:

Don’t worry Alec, you’re not alone, I’ve already linked that video on an older article about the game ^^”

  12. Crumpled Stiltskin says:

So, needless to say, I’m odds and ends about picking this up. Glad they finally have a demo. I guess it’s no better to be safe than sorry, but Id like to try it out first.

A-ha’s finest hour was Saints Row 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9BoIEY4xA4

  15. Spindrift says:

Huzzah! Now I, a Seattle resident, can land a helicopter on my own house without having to buy a helicopter OR the full game.

  16. squidlarkin says:

As a Seattle resident, I guess I have to download this.

  17. Rikard Peterson says:

A-ha makes me think of Knowing Me, Knowing You.

  18. phlebas says:

    RIP Ken Russell.

  19. noggin says:

Oh wow, I spawned without a helicopter!!! Found myself on a bleak Dali-esque plain with some disinterested bystanders, so I upped and ran.

I’ve been running for about 40 minutes now. I’ve wedged the W key down, switched to 4x time and am relaxing with a cup of tea, watching myself frantically pegging across low-resolution hills.

I think it’s going to take him, er… me, at least another hour to reach the city, which is fine because it’s entertaining to watch.

One question though, for anyone else who has had the rare privilege of played this game without a helicopter – can cars collide with you? I’ve been taking care to slow down when crossing the roads.
