Rising Storm is free for keepsies right now

The WW2 Pacific Theater FPS action of Red Orchestra spin-off Rising Storm [official site] is yours to grab for free right now. The Humble Store are giving the game away to celebrate the impending end of their spring sale. Tim Stone will tell you that Rising Storm is one of the best simulation games and Alec will add that it’s one of the best FPSs, which seems a strong pair of endorsements for a free game. Rising Storm 2 will launch in only a few days, on the 30th, so do come see what the series is about.

You’ve got until 6pm tomorrow to grab a Rising Storm Steam key free from Humble. Rising Storm also includes the multiplayer bits of Red Orchestra 2, so it’s a double freebie. Our Alec says:

“Far closer to simulation than any Call of Duty or Battlefield, it’s very much a specialist game, with a clarity of vision that delights its audience. Standalone RO2 expansion Rising Storm was where the more realistic (i.e. unforgiving, i.e. brutal) approach to warfare really hit its stride. The asymmetrical sides (American and Japanese), the glut of period weapons, a squad-based ethos and true variety to the maps. This is not about speedy supermen at war, and nor is it about chasing meta-rewards: it is about becoming very skilled at something very difficult, which is to say war.”

Rising Storm 2: Vietnam did recently hold an open beta test but that’s over now. If you want to check out what Rising Storm is broadly about, grabbing the first for free is a good way to go. Not that it wouldn’t be a peachy gift even without a sequel coming.

Red Orchestra 2 and Rising Storm is great. Difficult games, but they really work when it comes to modelling an infantry battle with front lines.

Yes, would have been a great deal except that it is 100% multiplayer–Grrrrr….Anyone know how to activate the campaign mode for single player. Bit of misleading slight of hand there, RPS.

      • klops says:

The campaign mode in RO2 was crappy tutorial to the multiplayer. It is very bad and the game is meant to be multiplayer.

          That’s what I read later on, too…;) Glad I didn’t shell out for this…;)

“Would have been” a great deal? It’s free! What more do you want?!

If you want to get this you’ll need to make a Humble Bundle account and then link it to your Steam account. Once you’ve done that you’ll get a key you have until the 10th of June to validate.

You might do all this and then, like me, find that you already own it ‘cos you threw all your money at Tripwire on the inital RO2 release.

    Hmm.

    • Donkeyfumbler says:

You no longer need to link your Steam account – they just give you the key to put into steam in the usual fashion.

      • ButteringSundays says:

Well, it’s both. Your purchases are linked to your steam account, but you still activate the game via a key.

        Unless something changed.

The other option is to gift the key, which involves telling humble who you’re gifting it to.

I have over 1,000 hours in Red Orchestra 1, but 2 and Rising Storm are trash. It is NOTHING BUT META REWARDS, you guys are lying your asses off, it’s nonstop leveling up, forever, leveling leveling leveling, unlocking dumb shit, tons of GUI HUD, numbers, words, garbage floating around everywhere.

The true sequel to Red Orchestra is Squad. RO was about maps like Berezina, not Danzig. Tripwire is ass.

  6. butt furniture says:

Rogue Spear, Urban Operations, Infiltration, Ghost Recon, Flashpoint, Red Orchestra, Mare fuckin’ Nostrum, Ground Branch (ahahaha), Squad

that’s the lineage, folks, real ass games for real ass boys

Red Orchestra 2 is in my opinion one of the best shooters ever made. Not as big of a fan of Rising Storm but I do still like it a lot. Bummed I missed out on the RO’s time, but Darkest Hour is still pretty active surprisingly. I always wished the Western front would have made it into RO2 (I don’t consider HOTW high enough quality to count it). Looking forward to Rising Storm 2 though!
