Warhammer: Vermintide 2 scurries into closed beta

Warhammer: Vermintide 2

Rat season has officially begun. Following directly on from Vermintide 1’s bombastic finale-as-free-DLC earlier this week, the sequel – due for launch early next month – is letting players in for their first taste of next-gen first-person Skaven-squishing starting today and continuing over the course of the weekend.

Closed beta access is primarily for those who pre-ordered Warhammer: Vermintide 2, but those who picked up the Humble Jingle Jam charity bundle are being granted access as well, plus folks who snag beta keys at PAX South recently.

To be fair, it’s not just everyone’s favourite horde of skittering rat-men you’ll be brawling with this time round. After falling through a teleport trap at the end of the first game, the merry band of mismatched heroes have found themselves further north, or at least I’m assuming that’s the case given the presence of Norscan Chaos warriors, a viking-esque horde beholden to the same dark forces as the Skaven, although not exactly on friendly terms. No matter – it just means you’ve got twice the heads to cave in this time round, and plenty more heroes to do it, as the dev-diary below will clue you in on.

All NDA restrictions have been lifted for this beta, so even if you can’t enjoy it first-hand, you can at least find an affable Twitch streamer to lurk behind and vicariously revel in the violence. Players are being encouraged to share footage, screenshots, thoughts and more on the game, and (of course) submit any bug reports to the developers before the full force of the playerbase crashes headlong into the game.

This closed beta should be entirely self-contained, so expect a character wipe (and a fresh download) required once the final version launches. Warhammer: Vermintide 2 will be available for all on March 8th, and is priced at £23/$30 on Steam, minus a 10% pre-order discount.

Why must it be so grey-brown?? That was my main complaint with the first game. It made it hard to distinguish individual enemies and environmental features, and is the main reason I didn’t get very far through it.

I don’t understand why Vermintide didn’t learn that lesson about readability from Left 4 Dead. The different context is no excuse; there’s plenty of precedent for colour in the Warhammer world, even among the Skaven.

  2. Captain Narol says:

Sorry to correct you, dear Dominic, but in fact the Chaos Warriors in Warhammer don’t behold to the same dark forces than the Skaven, which explain why they ain’t in friendly terms.

The Chaos Warriors serve the Lords of Chaos, when the Skaven worship The Hornet Rat which is an entity that doesn’t belong to that group and follows its own goals.

    • cpt_freakout says:

By the Horned One, the Hornet Rat sounds amazing

    • Dominic Tarason says:

I merely meant that the Horned Rat was a chaos god, even if it wasn’t part of the official banner-waving Team Chaos.

In the end, they’re another chaos-worshipping horde rampaging across the world at the same time as all the other chaos types are doing the same.

      • Imperialist says:

I guess it depends, as the Horned Rat was officially made the 5th Chaos God before WHFB died and was reborn. There is such a thing as Chaos Undivided, so i could totally see the Skaven tentatively fighting alongside the forces of Chaos. During the beta i did note that they tended to come in waves seperately, and not as a big mixed mob of Chaos Warrior and Rat. So while they maraud the same battlefield, they arent necessarily a combined force.

Got invited in time for this last run of the Closed Beta from Feb 22-26, before the Pre-Order Beta kicks off on the 28th… however I no longer have a PC able to play much of anything. I am just hoping that the PS4 Beta is on the way soon and best of luck to Fatshark for a smooth launch on PC. The smoother the launch on Steam the sooner the attention can shift towards the version I’ll get to play.
Oh and at some point please release the Death on the Reik content on PS4, after you don’t have so many things on your plate at once.

Damn, i must be lucky then. Yaaay! :)

I thought this was open beta ’cause i got a key but i didn’t pre-order, bought said Humble bundle or anything like that. I don’t even own the first Vermintide. Lol
