Gearbox’s Duke Nukem Real, Due 2011

By Alec Meer on September 3rd, 2010 at 5:50 pm.

UPDATE: CONFIRMED! And due for release next year. Wowsers.

Initial picture proof (Thanks to these chaps.) And here’s more. And more. And more. Honestly: it’s real.

Video stream on the ongoing PAX announcement below, including attendees actually playing it with their actual hands. Pigs flew after all.

ORIGINAL:The hot word on the hot street is that 2K are unveiling something hot at that time, live from the showfloor of the Penny-Arcade Expo. Hotter still, it’s hotly-tipped to be Gearbox’s rumoured finishing-up of Duke Nukem Forever. Is it? Maybe/probably/everyone on the internet’s saying it is, so don’t blame us if it isn’t. Look, Randy’s even wearing a relevant t-shirt today, though maybe he’s just a massive prankster.

Find out for yourself by pointing those beautiful eyes of yours at the live-streaming videobox below at 6pm BST, 1pm EST, 10am PST and 7pm CET (It is DNF. Maybe. Probably. Everyone on the internet’s saying it is anyway, so don’t blame us if it isn’t).

The embed code gave me a choice of colours for the border. I chose pink, just for you.

  13. Birdman Tribe Leader says:

I don’t mean to be a jerk, but do people actually think DNF is going to be any good? Isn’t it probably just going to be an average shooter with gameplay somewhere between Serious Sam and Gears of War with some lame jokes thrown in? It seems to me people are only excited about the game because it’s been delayed so long. (Although I guess Gearbox has a good reputation?)

    report

    • I think I still have a weakness for silly over-the-top shooters and there haven’t been much of those recently. All is gritty, brown and realistic nowadays, so DNF might hit a sweet spot.
Plus, there is of course a lot of nostalgia involved. I played Duke 3D with my friends for quite some time and it was an awesome multiplayer title back in the days.

    • Tei says:

      How you can say that?

      report

    • Flint says:

I’m excited because 1) DN3d continues to be fun as hell to play and still has a brilliant level design and thus there’s a chance that it might be true in Forever as well, 2) it has a heavy chance to stand out from the current boring FPS crowd, 3) Gearbox are good devs and 4) the footage trailer thingy that was released earlier this year after the (supposed) closure looked interesting and fun to play.

People moan all the time about not getting sequels to their beloved games from eons past. This one has a chance to happen now, no matter how much of a joke it became. I’m not going to start cynically brushing it off just because.

      report

  47. AndrewC says:

And they aren’t going to show the video.

That’s a pretty good punchline, you have to admit.

    report

    • Deston says:

I thought that was bloody hilarious when she said “ok we’re not going to show the video” and walked out of the booth.

There was a good 5-10 minute lag on the Ustream comments, and they were obviously going to flip out over that. Sure enough, a few minutes later the comments caught up and exploded in a slew of caps locks and furiously typo’d swearing.

      Brilliant!

Schadenfreude aside, the whole thing was a total waste of time. It didn’t help that afterwards when they went to video the people playing the game instead, the camera man / woman was totally useless and kept pointing the camera off screen at the backs of random people’s heads and changing between screens every couple of seconds. That coupled with the crappy low bitrate video, heavy lag, camera wobble, dropped audio, mic feedback, low contrast and bad angles made it utterly worthless to watch.

  54. Reapy says:

I honestly wish duke would die. Duke was a fun fps for the time, I liked it a lot, yada yada, but it was just a running joke. Watching some play footage now, all I see is a generic first person shooter. They will add in some punchy 1 liners, woopty do.

I can see what happened here though, a serious company that can release games bought the ip, threw in duke 3d assets, and now will churn out a generic FPS game. Maybe the only thing that I can look forward to with this game is that I can finally stop reading about duke after it gets released and forgotten.

    report

    • manveruppd says:

Not really, they stated they used all of 3DR’s asset’s – the game was more than 80% complete when they went under. Also, if you’re not as happy (and flabbergasted!) about this as everyone else in the thread, why post?

Just to make it clear, I know it’s gonna be just another FPS, but I’m just happy that all that hard work those people put in isn’t going to waste.

      report

    • Yeah, it’s nice that it didn’t go to waste, but man. We’re set up for another Daikatana here– lots of showing stuff off, lots of development and bragging, publicity each way, and, what, 12 or 13 years of development? I could be wrong, but I think it’s going to come out, be widely lauded for about 2 days, and then sink without a trace as people realize that it’s totally irrelevant in every way. Heck, it would have been irrelevant in 2000.

It’ll be interesting to see what comes of it, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for it being anything but dated and ridiculous.

      report

    • Monkeybreadman says:

Reapy… you and me are like one mind thinking the same thoughts. Duke was good when i was 15 and first person shooters with speech were relatively new.

Gah. You guys are lacking your requisite gooey cores of sentimentality. The story of DNF is the only true romance left in this internet age of everything, right now, yesterday is two months ago. This is the game we all grew up not playing!

      report

    • Adventurous Putty says:

I agree with BooleanBob — DNF has been a part of the PC gaming lexicon for so absurdly long that, at the very least, it’s a meme worth paying for.

      report

    • StingingVelvet says:

I don’t care what platforms it is on, I just know it better be classic-style FPS with a fast pace and over-the-top action. If it’s super slow paced like a lot of console-focused shooters then it isn’t a Duke game.

      report

    • Ganders says:

Well, it’s certainly going to have an extremely low field of view just like Borderlands and be nauseatingly unplayable on a pc without severe .ini file editing because of it.

Regenerating health, I can live with.

But please please please have a health bar instead of a sodding screen gray-out when being shot at.

    • I’ve not got anything against it being a multiplatform game or having regenerating health… but Checkpoints? Only being able to carry a limited number of weapons? I HATE checkpoint-only saving and there is absolutely no reason for it, but the second could actually hurt the Duke Nukem-style gameplay.

Having loads of ridiculous weapons at your disposal was part of the greatness.

Then, we will have to wait another five hundred million years for creatures to become intelligent enough to once more enjoy the fine art of computer gaming. Just our luck.

…of course, if that doesn’t happen, we might always die from a heart attack by share awesomeness. Or something. If not, if we do, against all odds, live to see the release of this game (and it lives up to the sky-high anticipations, which I find unlikely), then yay, and hell yeah!

Blame them for wanting to add every cool feature they saw in other titles. That’s where the blame lies on this one.

  75. Ozzie says:

Hurray! The return of a running gag! :D
I hope Take Two continues to make the marketing as non-existential as it always was, so that the game can just pop into existence and surprise us. Anything else would be inappropiate!

    report

  76. Kadayi says:

Well it’s definitely a game, whether it’s going to be a good one remains to be seen. I guess Gearboxes way of thinking about it is that if nothing else it’s going to sell units based on the novelty factor.

What I’m kind of interested in is knowing the breakdown regarding the agreement reached. No mention of 3DRealms at all, just Gearbox and 2K.

    report

    • manveruppd says:

I’d be interested to know that too, but sounds like they’re keeping their lips sealed.

      report

    • D says:

Hey Kadayi! Straying from normal internet form, I’d like to admit being wrong in a discussion with you about a year ago (or more), when I was convinced the lawsuit and seizure of Duke material would lead to a court stalemate and result in work on DNF never being resumed. You were right, go you, smart internet person!

      report

    • Kadayi says:

      @D

That’s very gracious of you. The way I figured it is, that everyone involved wanted to make money somehow so ultimately they’d reach some form of agreement and try and salvage what they could, sooner rather than later. Antiquated and redundant as the franchise is, it’s non appearance has provided it with a degree of cult status (even non gamers know it from Wired’s annual Vapourware awards), which ultimately (with the right marketing) they can capitalise on. Hell, I was never a huge DN fan, but I know I’ll probably get this just out of morbid curiosity if nothing else. I doubt very much that it’s going to set the world on fire, but if they play it completely for laughs it might not be all bad.

I’d definitely like to know whether the 3DRealms guys are still involved in the development in some ways or whether it was a complete hand off to Gearbox for a large cheque and the signing of a non-disclosure agreement. Personally I’m hoping that Gearbox at least picked up some of the guys 3DRealms had to let go when the project floundered last year.

Between this and Deus Ex: HR, I think I’ll be happy with the FPS’s I get in 2011. I actually got mildly excited watching some of the gameplay… When I COULD watch the gameplay. Epic cameraman FAIL, because he only stayed on one monitor for like 3 seconds before moving on to another monitor that was either doing the same thing as the other guy was before, or was in some completely other part of the level. Jesus! Just stay on one goddamned monitor, or at least stay for 2 or 3 minutes so we can get some sense of how the game actually PLAYS! HOLY CRAP MAN!

So ya, other than that bit of rage that came up, I’m all of a sudden looking forward to this game!

    report

    • Dominic White says:

Yeah, I only watched the stream for a couple of minutes before giving up. The cameraman has chronic ADD. Also, apparently no knowledge of how to handle a camera.

Most interesting thing I saw was this tiny little punk-rocker type chick with crazy tattoos all up and down her arms, playing the demo about a dozen times better than most of the people just running in circles and getting blown up.

Randy just said that he became a game designer because of the Duke (he worked on Duke Nukem 3D at 3DR).
I think the game has a special place in his heart so there is really hope this will be a kickass game and not just some quick cash job.

The trailer is embargoed because they want something special for people at PAX.
We should expect the trailer soon though (probably next week after PAX ended or maybe it gets leaked before).

A guy was interviewed who said he was former 3DR and that Gearbox formed a special project team with him and others from 3DR.
So hopefully the original material will fit with the stuff they had to create at Gearbox. :)

To me this is the best news of the year so far and this game will be pre-ordered regardless of price (I only do this with WoW Collector’s expansions these days).

    Really, really happy! :)

I don’t understand this business with cakes. I mean, cake is always good, do you need a special occasion for making a cake? And why is Duke relevant to this, is there some soundbyte I have missed?

No, I honestly just saw all the cake references (which I think were Portal references) and I thought, you know what I haven’t done in like, years? Baked a frikkin cake!

I quite like the look of that Ego/Health system (can take so much Ego damage – which regenerates – before your actual health starts getting eaten into). Operation Cock Block? Duke cheerily making his way up the lift with his pair of… rocket pistols?

    Colour me cautiously optimistic.

Just played it at PAX. It was alright but still looked a bit early stage. Run through some scripted corridors. Fight a big bipedal monster in a football stadium (forgot the name). Then some vehicle driving in another level and running through some more open terrain-ish level where you had a railgun, a shotgun and a shrink-ray gun.

Overall it felt like Duke to me. It also felt like they put a lot of humor and passion into it. We’ll see!

  100. Ugger says:

Why do people after a decade still say it looks unfinished and the graphics unpolished and whatever.

It frightens me both for what people expect and what is going to come out of this on a virtually no-money-left-just-finish-it-already budget push-out rush-move that is the consolified cancerification of the former Duke.

Can’t someone just secretly leak all of the raw content onto some site and subsequently torrent somewhere so that some insanely obsessed community modders can make us a true Duke game out of it?

Or in other words, I sure do hope this isn’t a closed as heck engine and moddable to hell and back.

    report

    • roryok says:

its based on unreal so hopefully it’ll be moddable.

well, one of the most loved things about the original was that it shipped with a level editor, so anyone could make their own maps. I’d wager a lot of people in the industry started out running Build, and I’d hope Gearbox continue that tradition by including an SDK

You people are so so so so very very wrong. Duke Nukem 3D was amongst some of the first video games I ever played a long time ago. Please shove your insipid judgements right up your anal cavities.

As for DNF, are you kidding me? This game is 11 years in the making. What a bloody joke. What game could ever live up to 11 years of hype? It’s a game about shooting people, for fuck sake. It’s only ever going to be a game about shooting people.

I hate to piss on the parade, and i’m sure it will actually be fun once it’s released, but seeing floods of idiotic comments screeching like it’s the second coming of christ boils my piss. Yes, duke ‘meant something’ but that’s irrelevant when this iteration of the series has been a running industry joke for over a decade now. It’s stupid that they’re actually making this again. 107. Tom O'Bedlam says:

My perfect Duke Nukem game, would be see Duke reduced to working in a supermarket, his fame faded as the modern world no longer accepts his form of testerone shooting maschismo. His mighty size thirteen boot now only used to kick the trollies accross the car park.

Then the pig cops come back, and there’s only one Aryan fuckcannon the world can turn to.

    report

  108. itsallcrap says:

Ok, ok, I believe you – it’ll be released.

But how can it ever be worth the time it took? I’m afraid Gearbox will have just slapped together whatever they inherited in the easiest way to make it into a passable game.

It’ll be worth about 75% in reviews and the legend will be lost. Never meet your heroes.

    report

  109. MycoRunner says:

It’s almost 2012 and DNF has an actual, real, confirmed release date?

On the other hand, how is this ANY different from the other promised release dates, and the near-completion footage of the game?

    report

  110. Daryl says:

So, is this going to be a paint by numbers modern shooter? Looks that way. If that’s the case, then that’s extremely disappointing. I could care less about the fact that it’s multiplatform, but that just seems to be the kiss of death for FPS games. I’m about ready to give up on the genre entirely. Every game I hear about seems to be getting cheapened to appeal to a mass audience. Nobody wants to deviate from the formula.

    report

  111. Sonic Goo says:

Duke will be released with all its outdated machismo and the revelation will be that it’s not outdated at all. Games are still like that. Gears of War, Unreal, Starcraft. All macho, macho, macho. We haven’t moved on one bit.
