Does it use the POS GTAIV engine?

      Man Raised by Puffins says:

      Yes.

    • skinlo says:

Its pretty good imo, especially the more recent versions with all the patches.

The trick was having a quadcore CPU.

    • SkittleDiddler says:

      skiinlo,

The trick is getting lucky. Having a quad-core CPU in no way guarantees that GTA IV will run as intended.

    • Beelzebud says:

Having a quad core, means squat with this game. I had a quad core when it came out, and I still have a quad core, and even with more memory, new graphics cards, etc, the game still runs like ass.

    • xavdeman says:

I still don’t understand why they had to change the protagonist. I don’t know who this new guy is. At least the change from MP to MP2:TFoMP wasn’t so jarring, and was justified by being a huge graphical upgrade in general. This, not so much, and it doesn’t explain the muscles / tacky bald-guy look.

    • magnus says:

New protagonist? It’s Max Payne with his head on upside down after a catastrophic plastic surgery disaster.

    • noodlecake says:

It’s no worse than the tacky trench coat look! He jut decided to shave his head and grow a beard. He was probably starting to recede. A lot of people who are embarrassed about losing their hair bic it off and pretend that the look was on purpose.

Also, some of us are lucky to have just the right shape skull to look totally badass with sub 1mm haircuts instead of a combover or a pate with a silly looking spread of hair on it.

On the upside, why shouldn’t a videogame character change his look? They all do it. Even Mario.

    • Kinth says:

Jeez when did all gamers become whiny little kids? ( and yes i do realise the irony that i am whining about whiners)

This whole” Bwaahhhh Max cut his hair, he’s not the same person anymore. This game isn’t Max Payne anymore he had a hair cut it must be a GTA spin off (which isn’t a witty or clever put down by the way) bwaahhhhh QQ etc…etc…etc” thing is starting to get annoying.

If you really think the only thing that defines Max Payne is a hair cut (or sam lake’s face for that matter) then you really need to go and play the first 2 games again. Also it doesn’t have to be new york at night time and raining to be considered Noir.

You think a man who wen’t through the things Max did in the first games is really going to be mentally stable ? or give a shit about his hair, Max is obviously at the point where he jus’t doesn’t give a shit about himself anymore. Judging by the latest trailer Max has an alchohol/drug problem and is still heavily affected by the events of the first two games (pretty sure you would be pretty messed up if your wife and kid were killed and then depending on which ending rockstar decides is canon possibly another death of someone you loved) Rockstar decides to take a risk and actually show a character who’s past actually has some effect on him and someone who changes throughout the game. then everyone cries about it. “bwaaahhh this game isn’t the same because they actually changed things for the sequel and didn’t make it exactly the same” these will be the same people who cry about the CoD franchise releasing the same game every year aswell.

People whine all the time about how sequels are too similar and now half of them bloody cry because they changed the hair style of a character.

Plus he doesn’t have it shaved for the entire game and no one here has any fecking idea as to why he does it so stop bitching till you actually know about it.

    • Mctittles says:

      @Kinth
      Reasons we “became” whiny:

      A. We are not sheep.

      B. Repeatedly getting burned by companies that end up giving us the game we feared after hyped marketing lied to us.

      C. Smart enough to read between the lines and tell what the game will be even with marketing teams boasting whatever crap comes out of their mouth
“Computer monitors come in different resolutions than t.v.’s and this quick port will…I mean…Game will have ‘gloriously’ ‘increased’ resolution and..err…’detail!'”

    • Dhatz says:

quad core doesnt even guarantee full HD not tearing under stress or 60 FPS flash games. THis has been an epic fail era for programming.

    • PJMendes says:

Kinth, I understand your opinion, but it’s wrong.

Max Payne is equal parts homage to 50’s noir detective movies and John Woo action movies. Max Payne 3 looks like a homage to “Fast and Furious: Bad Boys 3″ featuring Bruce Willis. You can easily see the disparity, the absurdity, the horror of this leap, I hope.

    • Unaco says:

      Just because it’s in a sunny/bright place, doesn’t mean it’s not noir.

    • Tuco says:

@Xavdevman: ironically enough, it’s the same actor who gave his face to the protagonist in Max Payne 2, James McCaffrey.
Just to point how your complaints are completely out of place.

I’m not even going to argue with PJMendes’ bullshit.

    • xavdeman says:

@Tuco: It doesn’t even look like him. Now it’s just like they gave the modelers one order: make his body type cooler and his face more badass! Goddamn Tony Vercetti looks more like Max Payne than this one.

    • misavcxzb says:

The textures could be better, the models more detailed. http://oua.be/die

    • roryok says:

someone needs to photoshop the guns out of that first screenshot.

      eyyyyyyyyyyy

    • lordfrikk says:

@Unaco: You know it kinda does? Otherwise it wouldn’t be called “noir” but “blanc”…

  5. Tyrone Slothrop. says:

Can’t wait, it certainly seems to have the best gunplay of any shooter I’ve ever seen and I did obsessively replay Max Payne 2 often just for the sheer joy of sending ragdolls careening into physics-enabled scenery. I do wonder what amount of technology will also find it’s way into GTA V.

Finally; obligatory hope that this will be better optimised than GTA IV, which while I love, still remains one of the worst optimised games ever released.

    • Melonfodder says:

Judging by the released trailers, the pretty impressive euphoria animation stuff will make it into the game for ragdolls and the way Max moves. I’m deffo looking forward to play with that!

  6. BrightCandle says:

High res and high quality? Then why in that first image do they appear to be using a low polygon model? It seems the current trend is to take a PC game and add in higher quality textures and call it top end graphics. It isn’t 2007 any more we expect DX11 features to be used along with the other goodies of the PC like 3 screens, 3d and we especially want tessellation.

    • SquareWheel says:

You do, perhaps. I find high-quality graphics rather meaningless.

    • iHavePants says:

Why does it seem like I’m the only one who realises how terrible of an idea the stupidly high poly tesselation methods in current DX11 examples are… it seems like anyone with a basic understanding of 3D Modelling would find much better alternatives to it.

    • Vagrant says:

It seems to me that tessellation is a great way to render cloth, possibly fluids. Adding tessellation to a static model is pretty silly, though. And who cares about 3 screen rendering? I just want an FOV useable by humans.

    • Mctittles says:

      @iHavePants
As a long time graphics programmer I am completely in agreement with you on this. Why use your cpu or graphics card to subdivide into a higher polygon model that isn’t going to match your low poly textures? If you are going to do that then you’ll need to make a texture to match and if your going to do that why not skip the extra processing required for tessellation and just feed it the higher poly model from the start?

  7. TheIronSky says:

Always disappointed with Rockstar’s skyboxes/mipmaps, but these character models look good.
Excited for bullet time with lots of particles – Should be fun. Hopefully the RAGE engine can handle all of the appropriate effects.

  8. Moni says:

    Pew, pew, pew! Thwip! Thwip!

  9. Yar says:

Great, now I have to upgrade my GPU to one that can support glorious.

  10. woodsey says:

Hopefully, the fact that it’s level-based means it won’t run and look like shit (see: their other games).

    • skinlo says:

You obviously aren’t playing Rockstar games. GTA4 looked great at max, albeit didn’t run amazingly well.

    • Stevostin says:

Agreed. GTA IV is one of the most jaw dropping I’ve played on a PC. Sure it was frustrating to lack FPS, but at least it was a sight that no other game was able to display. Huge space, huge amount of cars and people, very convincing character animations, superb natural lights (and ugly shadows, ok), great explosions. Now with patches, I consider the ratio “sight / FPS” to be very honnest. Also it’s stable, can handle ALT TAB with no fuss and can be efficiently tweaked and modded. I really think this engine doesn’t get the respect it deserves.

never heard of sun lotion ?

It protects your baldness and gives you that anisotropic shine.

      Slick.

  12. Skabooga says:

If these screenshots were to be captioned like the last batch, what would they read?

  13. SkittleDiddler says:

MP3 seems to have the same ulgy, grainy low-poly look that L.A. Noir PC sports. Son I am disappoint.

  14. panda_prosecuter says:

Sure Rockstar, I totally believe you’re putting a lot of work into the PC version when you only post 720p screenshots.

  15. Squirrelfanatic says:

So, what keeps Max going these days?

  16. Ultra Superior says:

HWAT is that thing on top of the house in the second screen ?

It’s oversized, hideous, inexplicable and BADLY TEXTURED.

    God, that thing is LOOMING!

  17. Khemm says:

Is this some kind of GTA spin off? It doesn’t look like Max Payne to me. Like, at all.

The screenshots are all right. The textures could be better, the models more detailed. They seem to have FXAA applied, too.

  18. Sarlix says:

Yes. Not that interested in the game, but I want the shirt.

  19. Eddy9000 says:

I thought clicking on the pictures would let me see some hot man-on-man action featuring sexy bald Max, but then I re-read the last line and noticed it actually said ‘biggerised’. So disapointing.

  20. CaptainHairy says:

I will say only this: they have trademarked a new word because of this game.

    That word is:

    SHOOTDODGE.

I will be three different flavours of disappoint if this is not picked up by the gaming press because it is the one thing that has brought me joy these last few days.

    SHOOTDODGE.

  21. Yosharian says:

    Grisled? Grizzled? Gristled?

    Seriously though… gameplay news?

  22. wazups2x says:

Everything I’ve seen so far from this game it looks nothing like a Max Payne game.

Wish Remedy was doing this instead of Rockstar and their terrible PC ports.

  23. DickSocrates says:

First 2 games: Dark, brooding, winter, night time, snow.
New game: Bright, actiony, summer, daytime, short sleeves.

Can’t wait for the mod that removes bald and stupid looking Max from the game.

Also, a Hawaaiian shirt is a bold choice for Clapham.

    • Unaco says:

Just to point out, it was a bold choice in the original game as well. Gamers might not have, but Max has moved on and is trying to get on with his life… and he’s done that by moving away from the city and the torment that took the lives of his family and everyone he ever loved. Can’t blame him much for that. Plus, he’s in a foreign country, so hopefully the ‘powers’ involved in the first 2 games might overlook him, or be unable to reach him. And Noir isn’t about a physically dark place… it’s about a dark setting, a dark tone, and that can still happen in the brightest, sunniest, summeriest of climes. Like Chinatown.

    • Dhatz says:

first zombies in horror games, then daytime and Dead Island.

    • Tuco says:

      So much whiny crap.

  24. Dhatz says:

I recentyl fixed my monitor by the Lagom guide you guys linked, I cannot say if MP3 will require ingame brightness tweaking, but they did overshoot the bump mapping. Why do games do it that often?

  25. DocSeuss says:

Does the retail version have Steamworks?

  26. wodin says:

I look at some pics then read people whining about the poor graphics…I then look at the pics…I then re read the whine…look at pics…re read whine…and come to the conclusion that I’m either
A: Getting old so alot of graphics look pretty damn good to me as I remember Manic Miner. Or
B:Some people will never be happy.

    • Tyrone Slothrop. says:

You’re not alone. keep in mind though, people have whined about graphics even in what I thought to be inarguably stunning visuals such as in The Witcher 2, BF3 and Alan Wake. Even though the three games have beautiful technical assets, art direction and superlative attention-to-detail, someone will always point to a texture that isn’t ideal or a prop that’s too angular and make a perverse judgement on the quality.

I think Max Payne 3 looks phenomenal.

    • RegisteredUser says:

I remember Dig-Dug, Pac-Man and Pong, but I still think graphics are only part of the equation in a shooter.
Will there be gore and limbs and other fun stuff this time, I ask! How nice do the ragdolls look!
Can I shoot apart half the building!
That’s also part of graphics, not just “how round can I make a head shape”. :p

    CelticPixel says:

Loved the first two games. Don’t care about his hair cut. Was apprehensive about the new setting, but I reckon it’s looking good. For better or worse, I’ll be buying it and deciding for myself.

  28. Robbeasy says:

His head is on upside down – hairy bit should be at the top.

No sale for me after such an obvious graphical error

  29. Gabe McGrath says:

I’m sad that this post wasn’t what I thought it was at first glance… “GUMBY IN Hi-Res”.

Hmm, perhaps this video by Tiffany featuring a low-res Gumby at 1m13sec will suffice…

  30. 2late2die says:

    Clips or GTFO.
Seriously, static screenshots don’t impress me. Show me some clips of the game in action and give me accurate specs for the machine it’s running on and put an fps overlay – then I might be impressed.

  31. WJonathan says:

Soooo…3 screenshots (one of which we see in the link) makes an update now. OK.

    Jackablade says:

He’s awfully skinny in that second shot. Looks like a heroin addict. I’m wondering if this is a story – it’s mentioned he’s addicted to painkillers. Maybe this is unemployed drug addict max early in the game before he tries to pull himself together by dragging his sorry arse down south of the border.

    • lijenstina says:

That’s why he has beefed up his arms so the veins pop out more. Easier to find.

  33. bill says:

So I assume they are using the different levels of hair to make clear distinctions between the different timeframes? With it probably being non-linear and involving flashbacks.

If so, it’s a lot more acceptable than it first appeared. Like Dr Who in a Fez / Cowboy hat.

  34. RegisteredUser says:

If they think that higher res and better textures are the only thing making it a PC game, then there will be real crap coming towards us once more.

Then again the use of bullshit marketing hyperbole kinda already is a giveaway for that.

I sometimes honestly wish they’d just say things a lot more flatter and to the point as opposed to trying to make things seem EXCITINGEXCITINGEXCITING.
Don’t they realize they just end up looking like monstrous douchebags?

  35. suibhne says:

RPS is the only site where the lightbox’d screenshots don’t work for me – they expand far bigger than my actual screen, but I can’t look at them because scrolling (with arrow keys, scroll bar, and scroll wheel) actually scrolls the base screen behind the screenshot. Irritating. Any suggestions?

    • RegisteredUser says:

I think the whole “same screen zoom” logic that appeared within the last year or so is utter shit and should be abolished again. And the people that came up with it should be severely beaten within inches of their life. It made the web go from being able to read and article while looking at pics in a second window to just forcefully shoving more shit in your face that only serves to obscure the very thing it is supposed to flesh out.

If you third-mouse-button click(for some people wheel-click) – this goes for Firefox, Chrome and perhaps Opera, too – or right click, open in new window/tab the pictures, they get their own tab/window like it is supposed to be and can be properly viewed.

  36. deadly.by.design says:

I really hope they keep the quirky side details like Dick Justice and Address Unknown. They don’t have to be new versions of those exact parts, but something similar. For instance, maybe a cheesy Portugese novela or action movie on random TVs that parallels Max’s storyline progress.

Also, I’ll be the guy to say it…. Max Payne 2 was superior to the first Max Payne.

  37. moarage says:

“gloriously increased resolution and graphical detail in both the epic story and the explosive multiplayer modes.”

uhm isn’t that how most pc games are supposed to be? I hope it stays the norm and not becoming the exception

  38. Luftwaffles says:

That muzzle flash in the second screenshot looks absolutely awful. Good god.

  39. Jahandar says:

I just noticed that there was an article about a PC version of a Rockstar game that didn’t mention Red Dead Redemption in the comments, so I thought I’d fix that.
