Beta For A MOBA: Prime World Opens Up

By Adam Smith on June 21st, 2013 at 8:00 am.

Prime World is a free-to-play MOBA with a slice of meta-game on top in the form of castle construction and town-building. Expanding the town and modifying its structures provides new talents, which can then be attached to heroes, providing advantages in combat. Sort of like a HOMM and DOTA stew? The game has been in closed beta testing but this weekend, it opens up to the wider world – “The first Open Beta weekend has arrived! The Beta Weekend will start at June 21, 11AM PST (2PM EST) and last until June 24, 1AM PST (4AM EST). No invitation is necessary and no progress will be wiped once the beta ends, so you’ll be able to carry on with your heroes and castle in all future battles after that.” There is a noisy trailer below.

You’ll be able to sign up through the website, which obviously contains a large picture of an archer’s bum and contorted torso.

So basically an RTS with town-building elements removed that added town-building elements? REVOLUTIONARY!!!1!!1

  2. Kiytan says:

that is a super annoying trailer

  3. Fedaykin says:

Wtf is wrong with the people making these kind of trailers. Epilepsy inducing, non-informative piece of crap..

    • RaytraceRat says:

I think they wanted to make it dynamic, exciting and appealing to anyone who don’t give a crap about strategy games.

    • kopema says:

The Fast And Furious movies have made over 2 billion dollars so far.

There is a terrifyingly large market segment out there who will buy literally ANYTHING, so long as it’s advertised in commercials that test well among severely brain-damaged cats.

As far as advertising agencies are concerned, the rest of us do not exist.

      • malkav11 says:

To be fair, I don’t know about the rest of the franchise, but Fast & Furious 6 is pretty darned entertaining in a goofy, braindead muscleman sort of way.

    RedViv says:

Old Longbeard McMace and Lady Battlethong seem to be really angry at the play button.

      lowprices says:

Lady Battlethong is just grumpy because she’s chilly. Longbeard McMace is shifting the weight of his mace to his off hand, so he can use his main hand to offer her his cloak. It’s actually very touching.

The play button is a metaphor. Possibly for free-to-play mechanics.

    • Captain Joyless says:

      That battlethong really is egregious.

      Lord Custard Smingleigh says:

Lady Battlethong also appears to wield a spiked tray, possibly with some sort of angry battle-sandwich on top.

Meh another boring fantasy setting… But wait, did I see a cog stuck on that house? So it is actually steampunk, awesome!

I am sick of any sword that isn’t made of laser by this point. Is there any MOBA even trying to explore a little more than “Copy LoL, dota, etc. and change gameplay mechanic X”?
Enough ranting, what I could like that was hinted at in the clip was the land changing ist form to be greener. Got me curious.

    • operf1 says:

When you capture the flags near the towers, the land changes into your faction’s terrain.
You can teleport to friendly terrain from your base (which saves you time after respawn), and it has other bonuses as well.

      Awesomenaughts. Simple yet brilliant.

  6. Hmm-Hmm. says:

That seemed rather uninspired. Also a bad trailer, which doesn’t help.

  7. Yuela says:

I am in beta and so far all I can say is that they have a really, really terrible farmville style resource management system tacked onto an uninspired DOTA clone. See, to improve you champions and get better abilities for them you have to construct buildings, which take resources and time to complete. Resources build at an agonizingly slow rate so you either have to be very patient or you throw real money at them, thus losing your F2P virginity, which, like in real life, is a messy and ultimately disappointing affair.

TL;DR: Like Farmville? Like Dota? Play either of them and be happy but please not this. Its terrible and we don’t want to encourage that kind of behaviour.

  8. ZIGS says:

Isn’t there a tower defense spin-off of this game? Any word on that?

    • RaytraceRat says:

There is a demo on Steam for that tower defence spin-off. It’s kinda ok, with way too saturated graphics and annoying sound assets.

    • botd says:

It’s bad. Has a CCG deck building thing spliced into it that just means you have to grind forever to beat the next mission. The actual tower defense mechanics are OK, but there are many better options out there.

  9. Steelphoenix says:

I really liked Etherlords, but this seems bad. Sadpanda here :/

  10. Moraven says:

On the splash image for the video, it looks like a art rip of Katarina from LoL. With even less clothes.

So… Are MOBAs the new “WoW-killer MMO”?

A few years ago, everyone and their mother’s brother was making an MMO and trying to dethrone WoW to get a slice of that sweet MMO subscription pie. Now it seems to have switched to MOBAs, and everyone wants to dethrone LoL and DOTA2 to get a slice of that sweet free-to-play micro-transaction pie.
