Parcel Force: This Way Up Is A Cute Puzzler

Express delivery

Here's a rather sweet little puzzle game, that's yours completely free. It's called This Way Up, in which you roll a packaging box around tiled levels, trying to reach a goal tile. But all the while attempting to keep your cardboard cube facing the right way to be able to, er, fire purple blasts of magic.

The game by Hadyn Lander's Skybreaker Games is on Game Jolt to be played via the Unity plugin, or downloadable from the same page. (Or, shhhh, whisper - is on Android for free too.)

And it plays rather nicely. There's the usual frustration of bending your brain to 45 degrees, to use the arrow keys to control an isometric view. (Gamepad support would have been very welcome here - you can rotate those things.) It's also certainly not the most original of concepts, but it's very nicely delivered, a pretty, chunky design suiting the inherent clumsiness of rolling a box, with lovely plinky music.

I've found it's immensely more enjoyable when the puzzles are focused on how to get the box to the goal, rather than how to do it in the fewest moves. It's a rare game where I'm happier scoring 1/3 stars, but there's a lot more fun to be had here experimenting with the level, than painstakingly trying to refine it. Although it'll definitely give some an incentive to play them over and over.
