Seriously? Why would you EVER name a ship that?
10/12/2012 at 18:29 Rotekian says:
Well space hulks are generally a collection of ships stuck together in the first place. Thus they might be given a suitably evil sounding name designation. Alternatively the hulk could contain imperial ships named Sin of [Whatever] and [Whatever] Damnation.
Those 2 options are about the best possible explanations I can think of though,
10/12/2012 at 18:51 ThomasLund says:
(Dev here)
Its Sin of Damnation, because thats what the 3rd edition board game hulk is called :-)

10/12/2012 at 19:04 colw00t says:
Have you MET Warhammer 40K? Everything is named like that. It’s a setting that started out as a ridiculously over-the-top parody of ’80s GRIM HARDCORE DARK VIOLENCE that kept ramping up the GRIMDARK every edition and forgot it was a parody somewhere along the way.
10/12/2012 at 19:12 Gap Gen says:
Nothing that contains the Orks can possibly not be a parody.
10/12/2012 at 19:58 Skabooga says:
It’s become a parody of itself, some would say for the better.
10/12/2012 at 19:29 unistrut says:
As mentioned a space hulk is an accretion of wrecked ships, so it doesn’t really have an official name, just whatever designation the people who re-discover it assign it. So, kind of like how NATO gave every Soviet fighter a designation starting with “F”, space hulks all get designations that sound like heavy metal song names.

Best review (preview?) ever.
10/12/2012 at 17:35 wodin says:
Interesting..though Space Hulk would only work with an engine similar to XCom’s tactical engine..must be turn based…
I had the first edition of the boardgame..never played and figures not clipped off spruce..my Mum and Dad either lost it in a move or I gave it away……
If done right this is something for me to get excited over I feel..most likely a November release next year.

Maybe these seen XCom be a success and trun based, so are finally going to do some turn based games again!! I hope so..Chaos Gate returns maybe..
10/12/2012 at 17:35 MOKKA says:
Now all we need to do is to hope that THQ lasts long enough for this game to actually come out.
10/12/2012 at 17:37 Unaco says:
I don’t think THQ have anything to do with this. It’s being developed by FullControl, I think.
10/12/2012 at 17:46 solidsquid says:
That depends on whether Space Hulk comes under the 40k licence, which THQ still has rights over
10/12/2012 at 17:50 Unaco says:
Not really. I think it depends more on who they’ve announced to be the developers… which is Full Control. Not THQ. And that there’s no mention of THQ on any of the websites or announcements… whereas Full Control is mentioned on the GW Page and announcement, as well as the game’s website.
10/12/2012 at 18:21 stupid_mcgee says:
So, tell me. Who developed Dawn of War? Relic or THQ?
Quite frankly, it doesn’t matter who the developer is. THQ has distribution rights for all W40k games. THQ is not a developer, they are a publisher. And if Games Workshop gave the go-ahead for someone else to publish a W40k game, GW would be violation of their contract between them and THQ.
However, I’d be willing to bet that Space Hulk is not considered to be, technically, W40k. Space Hulk is its own thing and, though it’s set innthe W40k universe, it doesn’t use the W40k TM’d logo and is most likely considered a separate IP. But, yeah, any game bearing the W40k name MUST be published by THQ. That’s why THQ paid Games Workshop a ton of money for the W40k rights.
10/12/2012 at 18:27 Unaco says:
Relic developed Dawn of War. THQ might have distribution rights, but we don’t know what the details of any contract they have with GW is. And there has been no mention of THQ being associated in any of the articles/announcements that have been made about this.
10/12/2012 at 18:12 f1x says:

Before crying of joy lets see if they can actually make a good game

Oh, so they finally made a game based on Planet Hulk, the Incredible Hulk storyline set in outer space?
(No, I’m just kidding. I already have three Space Hulks, two of which are previous PC incarnations, and one is one of the tabletop versions.)
10/12/2012 at 17:38 Moni says:
Now, is this actually going to be a X-COM inspired revival of a classic real-time stratetactics game, or is it just going to be a thing based on Space Marines running around a big floating bit of metal?
Actually, you don’t need to answer that question, because either answer is acceptable.
SPACE HULK!
10/12/2012 at 17:39 Chris D says:
Much as I appreciate you had to stick to a strict word count it would probably be useful to mention that this is indeed an adaptation of the board game and not an FPS based on it.

Which is sortof a shame if you ask me because regardless of your thoughts on FPS adaptations of things WALKING AROUND IN TERMINATOR ARMOUR WOULD BE THE GREATEST EXPERIENCE KNOWN TO MANKIND. Yes, that was deserving of caps, because SPACE HULK. The Emperor Protects.
10/12/2012 at 17:39 Unaco says:
There is actually a website for the game… Mentioned at the end of the video. From that…
ABOUT SPACE HULK
Based on the best-selling board game and set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Space Hulk is a 3D digital turn based strategy game that recreates the classic claustrophobic board game experience for single player and multiplayer cross-platform play between PC, Mac and on iOS.
Space Hulk is set in the isolated corridors and tomb-like chambers of an ancient vessel lost in the graveyard of space. Players lead a small army of fearless Space Marine Terminators to battle in a ferocious fight for survival against hordes of predatory alien Genestealers.
The main features are
Blood Angel terminator squad
Fearsome Genestealers with challenging AI
Thematic 3d environment
Single player campaign based on the “Sin of Damnation” hulk
New coop multiplayer levels against the Genestealer AI
Multiplayer head-to-head recreating the board game experience against a friend
Cross platform multiplayer between PC, Mac and iOS
Level editor with ability to share creations
Game expansions in the future as DLC

The website is linked in the article as “SPACE HULK”
10/12/2012 at 18:22 Unaco says:
It is now, but wasn’t when the article went up originally. It only had the Games Workshop page when first posted… and it was after the video.
10/12/2012 at 20:59 zeroskill says:
So is it save to assume that this game won’t be a first / third person shooter with the Space Hulk name tacked onto it? Because that was pretty much what I was expecting when I opened the article.
10/12/2012 at 22:04 Unaco says:
It’s a very close translation of the boardgame mechanics, to the computer. Turn based, topdown/isometric, overwatch, action points. Things like that.
10/12/2012 at 23:35 Jackablade says:
From a studio who’s previous works have been a little on the mediocre side.
11/12/2012 at 03:08 Slaadfax says:
Aww, don’t say that; GW works really hard on their cute little grimdark Warhammer universe ;-)
11/12/2012 at 05:14 MadTinkerer says:
Technically, every computerised version of Space Hulk has been a First Person Shooter, but they’ve been Turn Based First Person Squad Shooters.
10/12/2012 at 17:39 DrScuttles says:
Here’s hoping it’s closer to the old first person, Hired Guns style game rather than a straight recreation of the board game on a computer.
edit: seems the latter is true. Oh, well.
10/12/2012 at 17:46 wodin says:
I disagree I’m made up they are going turn based boardgame style but animated…this day and age it could look superb.
Also imagine if they give you the ability to paint your troops!!
10/12/2012 at 18:03 rapier17 says:
I’d really personally love to have FPV for this. Think how incredible it could be to stomp around a hulk with your friends, trying to complete the objective against overwhelming odds – it could have been everything Space Marine should have been! Dark corridors with fast scary enemies rushing towards you and bursting out of pipes and doorways, the intensity of holding a position for as long as possible to prevent the ‘stealers getting to it, the bowel-loosening terror of coming across a Broodlord.
I think they’ve missed a trick in not doing an ‘up to date’ Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels with multiplayer – I don’t want to tell the Terminators where to go, I want to be playing from their perspective, inside the awesomeness that is Tactical Dreadnaught Armour.
10/12/2012 at 17:39 cloudnein says:
SPACE MAC
10/12/2012 at 17:40 Lars Westergren says:
I’m always up for some more turnbased tactics, but as someone who didn’t play the originsl, didn’t it get boring with the same enemy all the time?
10/12/2012 at 17:50 wodin says:
It’s all about closed environments narrow passage ways etc so it really does test you tactically..can be very very hard game. I would have preferred something along the lines of Chaos Gate to be honest..but this is better than nothing.
10/12/2012 at 17:54 colw00t says:
Having one enemy type actually makes the game better. it’s a game about controlling terrain and trying to hold back an infinite tide with very limited resources.
I’ve played a lot of Space Hulk in boardgame form.
10/12/2012 at 17:52 Chris D says:
Actually no, with the caveat that witha board game the enemy is really the other human player rather than a particular race or faction.
It’s a far more assymetric game than 40K or Necromunda with the marines having a small team to achieve an objective while the genestealers have (usually) unlimited resources to try to stop them. Variety is provided more by the scenario more than force composition.
Probably worth keeping in mind it is very much more a boardgame rather than a tabletop wargame like 40K. X-Com in corridors is probably not a bad reference point if you’re unfamiliar with how it works.
10/12/2012 at 18:18 BooleanBob says:
Call me pessimistic, but this has expanded ruleset, new enemies, xp-based tech and talent trees ‘reimagining’ written all over it.
10/12/2012 at 19:57 sub-program 32 says:
Also, since this is based on the third edition of Space Hulk, the Broodlord (basically a boss Genestealer) may also be avalible, as it is incuded in certain scenarios within the boardgame 3rd edition.
10/12/2012 at 17:41 Sardonic says:

But man, I remember my “CCNA” class in high school. All I learned to do was program routers over console in the most basic way. And we spent an entire year doing it, because our teacher didn’t know anything beyond that. So after the first two months we would spend about 10 minutes setting up 4 routers from scratch every day. The rest of the class was spent playing Starcraft because we convinced the teacher that playing over the LAN we just set up was a way to show we had configured everything correctly.

Sadness. I like that they make it like the boardgames, but to be honost. If I was going to play it, like several others, I wanted it to be like a left for dead version of Space Hulk. I know, it might sound stupid, but it would be really awesome!

Am I the only one who played the Space Hulk game for 3D0? That game terrified me as a kid. That game, D, and PO’d were really some of the first dark/mature games that I encountered. Good times.
11/12/2012 at 12:35 strangeloup says:
You are not alone. It was a pretty amazingly great game. Still got my 3D0 somewhere as well!
As I recall, that version of Space Hulk came out on a few other formats, but the 3D0 version was still the best one.

Let’s not forget Alien Assault, nice little game RPS posted about a few years ago. It keeps me going with that much needed Space Hulk fix from time to time.

OMG SPACE HULK!!
“turn-based” – oh… it isn’t just going to be the board game brick for brick is it?
I was hoping for a re-imagining of “Vengeance of the blood Angels” for a sec there with everything shiney new and coop centric

I was going to complain about the lack of actual information in the article (even though I thought it was funny) but, um…I guess that’s all we know. There is going to be a game called Space Hulk in 2013, for PC, Mac, and iOS.
I can -hope- that it’s a faithful recreation of the boardgame experience that was insanely expensive even when it wasn’t out of print and that Games Workshop is uninterested in reprinting again, but I suspect not. Then again, that’s the only version of a Space Hulk experience I could see working on iOS. Then again again, people seem insanely convinced that action games work on iOS, so there’s no guarantee they won’t just try that anyway.

And since it wasn’t announced in the trailer if you want to play an Android game that totally isn’t Space Hulk or in any way related to the copyrights owned by the highly litigious Games Workshop you should look into Templar Assault for Android. It even has some light role-playing elements with stats and skills and such.
The Trese brothers do a couple of other excellent games as well. Like Star Traders which is definitely not Elite and Cyber Knights with has nothing to do with the old console Shadowrun games.

This might be one of the finest pieces of journalism I’ve read this month.
More seriously, I love RPS for articles like this. There’s a great sense of humor to be seen here. It’s a tragedy that the gaming press isn’t more mirthful like RPS.

11/12/2012 at 12:36 strangeloup says:
So, basically Alec should become Reddit?
11/12/2012 at 13:13 plugmonkey says:
Well, that’s essentially what this article is. It seems to have gone down well.
I don’t know. I sometimes feel like I’m not young and hip enough to be reading RPS anymore. Every day it seems to get more clique-y and in-jokey, and sycophantic with it. Then when the authors start editing critical comments in the comments thread, that feels…weird. Sure, I see what it says above this text box here, but still. Weird.
I find when the zany irreverence takes centre stage over the games reporting, it starts to feel a bit forced. The other week I actually caught myself checking that an article wasn’t written by Alec before I started reading it. When did I start doing that? Turns out I come here more for the peerless coverage of alternative PC gaming than the crazy japes.
So, yeah. Best ignore me rambling. I’m just bitter at not being as meta as I used to be. I remember when all this were nowt but fields.
