Featuring our favorite kleptomaniac magpies, the Bluhd Rehvans!

Here’s hoping they end up on Terra and ‘accidentally discover’ the golden throne itself.

    • Mashakosha says:

No way, those are Blood Angels. Bald Ravens don’t like the blood iconography so much.

At least, it better be bloody Blood Angels.

      • colw00t says:

I think you’re right, actually. I was misreading the Crux Terminatus as a tan pauldron.

But I’ll take any opportunity to make jokes about the Bluhd Rehvans stealing things.

Those opportunities don’t actually come up very often.

      • subedii says:

        From the website:

You take command of a strike force of Blood Angels Terminators as they make their way through the close confines of the Space Hulk – Sin of Damnation

Seriously? Why would you EVER name a ship that?

        • Rotekian says:

Well space hulks are generally a collection of ships stuck together in the first place. Thus they might be given a suitably evil sounding name designation. Alternatively the hulk could contain imperial ships named Sin of [Whatever] and [Whatever] Damnation.

Those 2 options are about the best possible explanations I can think of though,

          • ThomasLund says:

            (Dev here)
Its Sin of Damnation, because thats what the 3rd edition board game hulk is called :-)

            TELL US MORE!

          • yurusei says:

I’m guessing the space hulk is an Orc ship as well? Seeing as the greenskins bolt scrap together to make their space flying things.

        • colw00t says:

Have you MET Warhammer 40K? Everything is named like that. It’s a setting that started out as a ridiculously over-the-top parody of ’80s GRIM HARDCORE DARK VIOLENCE that kept ramping up the GRIMDARK every edition and forgot it was a parody somewhere along the way.

          • Gap Gen says:

Nothing that contains the Orks can possibly not be a parody.

          • Skabooga says:

It’s become a parody of itself, some would say for the better.

        • unistrut says:

As mentioned a space hulk is an accretion of wrecked ships, so it doesn’t really have an official name, just whatever designation the people who re-discover it assign it. So, kind of like how NATO gave every Soviet fighter a designation starting with “F”, space hulks all get designations that sound like heavy metal song names.

  11. nutterguy says:

    Best review (preview?) ever.

  12. wodin says:

Interesting..though Space Hulk would only work with an engine similar to XCom’s tactical engine..must be turn based…

I had the first edition of the boardgame..never played and figures not clipped off spruce..my Mum and Dad either lost it in a move or I gave it away……

If done right this is something for me to get excited over I feel..most likely a November release next year.

    • Yhamm says:

“It’s a turn-based game that emulates the look and feel of the board game, but with full 3D animation”

      • wodin says:

        Superb..very exited about this..

Maybe these seen XCom be a success and trun based, so are finally going to do some turn based games again!! I hope so..Chaos Gate returns maybe..

  13. MOKKA says:

Now all we need to do is to hope that THQ lasts long enough for this game to actually come out.

    • Unaco says:

I don’t think THQ have anything to do with this. It’s being developed by FullControl, I think.

      • solidsquid says:

That depends on whether Space Hulk comes under the 40k licence, which THQ still has rights over

        • Unaco says:

Not really. I think it depends more on who they’ve announced to be the developers… which is Full Control. Not THQ. And that there’s no mention of THQ on any of the websites or announcements… whereas Full Control is mentioned on the GW Page and announcement, as well as the game’s website.

          • stupid_mcgee says:

So, tell me. Who developed Dawn of War? Relic or THQ?

Quite frankly, it doesn’t matter who the developer is. THQ has distribution rights for all W40k games. THQ is not a developer, they are a publisher. And if Games Workshop gave the go-ahead for someone else to publish a W40k game, GW would be violation of their contract between them and THQ.

However, I’d be willing to bet that Space Hulk is not considered to be, technically, W40k. Space Hulk is its own thing and, though it’s set innthe W40k universe, it doesn’t use the W40k TM’d logo and is most likely considered a separate IP. But, yeah, any game bearing the W40k name MUST be published by THQ. That’s why THQ paid Games Workshop a ton of money for the W40k rights.

          • Unaco says:

Relic developed Dawn of War. THQ might have distribution rights, but we don’t know what the details of any contract they have with GW is. And there has been no mention of THQ being associated in any of the articles/announcements that have been made about this.

      • f1x says:

Who is this Full control guys anyway?

Before crying of joy lets see if they can actually make a good game

        • Syra says:

sadly they can’t from looking at their website, not to mention the clunky 90s model and animation in the teaser… but God-Emperor do I want it to be good.

  14. Soulstrider says:

Although this were funny in the beginning this kind of articles are getting kind of ridiculous.

Edit:Really, you guys actually edited my comment to say something silly?

  15. tumbleworld says:

I think I see where you’re coming from.

(Space, obviously. In, on, or with a Hulk.)

  16. JohnP says:

Writing standards have dropped since Gillen’s day.

    • Dominic White says:

You’re right. Gillen would have bolded every SPACE HULK

      • AndrewC says:

Gillen would have mis-spelt SPACE HULK.

Possibly only the 113th SPACE HULK. Possibly deliberately.

        • Phantoon says:

No one knows, with what a wild card he was.

In fact, he might have been the original poster to mention Kieron!

  17. sub-program 32 says:

YES. Now I can experience this game without spending quite so much money on expensive card products and models! Also, my liking of XCOM combat probably also puts this game in a high priority for me.

Help me, Hulk cops. Space Hulks, help.

Might as well write just that considering the content on the video.

  24. Stuart Walton says:

I would be mightily impressed if this actually was a C+P of a PR Release.

    • Baines says:

I want to believe that Games Workshop decided that talking about a Games Workshop game infringed upon their rights, and thus order RPS to replace the entirety of the text with Games Workshop approved text.

(No, the above is not a reference to Sega’s pulling of Shining Force related videos from YouTube. It is a reference to Games Workshop pulling files and images related to their various boardgames from various online sites years ago, including other online stores.)

  26. pack.wolf says:

Can SEO go to far? Yes, yes it can.

  27. Deman says:

So what is this game like?

    • mr.black says:

      Musical puzzle stealth-platformer, obviously.

      • cwoac says:

Ah, yes. that would be the april fools issue of dragon magazine that had a dancing expansion for Space hulk (providing morale boost for the empire by sending marines into hulks to do tango and ballet just because they could).

  28. MadTinkerer says:

Oh, so they finally made a game based on Planet Hulk, the Incredible Hulk storyline set in outer space?

(No, I’m just kidding. I already have three Space Hulks, two of which are previous PC incarnations, and one is one of the tabletop versions.)

  29. Moni says:

Now, is this actually going to be a X-COM inspired revival of a classic real-time stratetactics game, or is it just going to be a thing based on Space Marines running around a big floating bit of metal?

Actually, you don’t need to answer that question, because either answer is acceptable.

    SPACE HULK!

  30. Chris D says:

Much as I appreciate you had to stick to a strict word count it would probably be useful to mention that this is indeed an adaptation of the board game and not an FPS based on it.

    http://www.spacehulk-game.com/about.html

    • CPLDANABD says:

Which is sortof a shame if you ask me because regardless of your thoughts on FPS adaptations of things WALKING AROUND IN TERMINATOR ARMOUR WOULD BE THE GREATEST EXPERIENCE KNOWN TO MANKIND. Yes, that was deserving of caps, because SPACE HULK. The Emperor Protects.

  31. Unaco says:

There is actually a website for the game… Mentioned at the end of the video. From that…

    ABOUT SPACE HULK

Based on the best-selling board game and set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Space Hulk is a 3D digital turn based strategy game that recreates the classic claustrophobic board game experience for single player and multiplayer cross-platform play between PC, Mac and on iOS.

Space Hulk is set in the isolated corridors and tomb-like chambers of an ancient vessel lost in the graveyard of space. Players lead a small army of fearless Space Marine Terminators to battle in a ferocious fight for survival against hordes of predatory alien Genestealers.

    The main features are
    Blood Angel terminator squad
    Fearsome Genestealers with challenging AI
    Thematic 3d environment
Single player campaign based on the “Sin of Damnation” hulk
New coop multiplayer levels against the Genestealer AI
Multiplayer head-to-head recreating the board game experience against a friend
Cross platform multiplayer between PC, Mac and iOS
Level editor with ability to share creations
Game expansions in the future as DLC

    • Jenks says:

The website is linked in the article as “SPACE HULK”

      • Unaco says:

It is now, but wasn’t when the article went up originally. It only had the Games Workshop page when first posted… and it was after the video.

        • zeroskill says:

So is it save to assume that this game won’t be a first / third person shooter with the Space Hulk name tacked onto it? Because that was pretty much what I was expecting when I opened the article.

          • Unaco says:

It’s a very close translation of the boardgame mechanics, to the computer. Turn based, topdown/isometric, overwatch, action points. Things like that.

          • Jackablade says:

From a studio who’s previous works have been a little on the mediocre side.

          • Slaadfax says:

Aww, don’t say that; GW works really hard on their cute little grimdark Warhammer universe ;-)

          • MadTinkerer says:

Technically, every computerised version of Space Hulk has been a First Person Shooter, but they’ve been Turn Based First Person Squad Shooters.

  32. DrScuttles says:

Here’s hoping it’s closer to the old first person, Hired Guns style game rather than a straight recreation of the board game on a computer.

edit: seems the latter is true. Oh, well.

    • wodin says:

I disagree I’m made up they are going turn based boardgame style but animated…this day and age it could look superb.

Also imagine if they give you the ability to paint your troops!!

      • rapier17 says:

I’d really personally love to have FPV for this. Think how incredible it could be to stomp around a hulk with your friends, trying to complete the objective against overwhelming odds – it could have been everything Space Marine should have been! Dark corridors with fast scary enemies rushing towards you and bursting out of pipes and doorways, the intensity of holding a position for as long as possible to prevent the ‘stealers getting to it, the bowel-loosening terror of coming across a Broodlord.

I think they’ve missed a trick in not doing an ‘up to date’ Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels with multiplayer – I don’t want to tell the Terminators where to go, I want to be playing from their perspective, inside the awesomeness that is Tactical Dreadnaught Armour.

I’m always up for some more turnbased tactics, but as someone who didn’t play the originsl, didn’t it get boring with the same enemy all the time?

    • wodin says:

It’s all about closed environments narrow passage ways etc so it really does test you tactically..can be very very hard game. I would have preferred something along the lines of Chaos Gate to be honest..but this is better than nothing.

      • colw00t says:

Having one enemy type actually makes the game better. it’s a game about controlling terrain and trying to hold back an infinite tide with very limited resources.

I’ve played a lot of Space Hulk in boardgame form.

    • Chris D says:

Actually no, with the caveat that witha board game the enemy is really the other human player rather than a particular race or faction.

It’s a far more assymetric game than 40K or Necromunda with the marines having a small team to achieve an objective while the genestealers have (usually) unlimited resources to try to stop them. Variety is provided more by the scenario more than force composition.

Probably worth keeping in mind it is very much more a boardgame rather than a tabletop wargame like 40K. X-Com in corridors is probably not a bad reference point if you’re unfamiliar with how it works.

    • BooleanBob says:

Call me pessimistic, but this has expanded ruleset, new enemies, xp-based tech and talent trees ‘reimagining’ written all over it.

    • sub-program 32 says:

Also, since this is based on the third edition of Space Hulk, the Broodlord (basically a boss Genestealer) may also be avalible, as it is incuded in certain scenarios within the boardgame 3rd edition.

  35. Sardonic says:

    You had me at “Space”.

Will probably buy for ios if the version is good enough, so I can purge xenos on the go.

    • chiroho says:

Given that it’s SPACE HULK, I’ll probably end up getting it for PC and iOS, just because I can then purge xenos on all the platforms I own.

  36. Juuuhan says:

Alec, you should deliberately have misspelled one word, so that you then can bash the community for not reading the content of this article.

Don’t let Apple know you’re using ios on non-Apple hardware! They’ll unleash the gibbering horde to cleanse you from the Earth. Err…I mean, they’ll send their loyal customers to tell you that Apple made ios first and that Cisco ripped them off and is just trying to cash in on the name. I mean, umm… Apple makes wonderful products that aren’t derivative of anyone else’s work and are completely, 100% original!

But man, I remember my “CCNA” class in high school. All I learned to do was program routers over console in the most basic way. And we spent an entire year doing it, because our teacher didn’t know anything beyond that. So after the first two months we would spend about 10 minutes setting up 4 routers from scratch every day. The rest of the class was spent playing Starcraft because we convinced the teacher that playing over the LAN we just set up was a way to show we had configured everything correctly.
