Deadlight: Director's Cut Out June, Survival Mode Deets

Bang, bang, you're undead

I was pretty torn with sidescrolling platformer/survival 'em up Deadlight when I first played it a few years back. For the most part, I enjoyed its zombie apocalypse narrative, its challenging gauntlet sequences and its wonderfully bleak presentation, however really struggled with certain jarring features - like how the protagonist would instantly drown upon impact in water, or how the screen would go all weird when he was exhausted. Just ask Adam about that one.

Other folk I've spoken to loved it, though, which might be why a Deadlight: Director's Cut [official site] is heading our way on June 21, bringing with it updated controls, full 1080p resolution, and a new Survival Arena mode which looks something like this:

Much similar to the main game, ammo will be in short supply in the Survival Arena while new weapons include machine guns, molotov cocktails and sniper rifles. "Pick-ups are essential to withstand the hordes, such as in-map weapons and ammunition," say publisher Deep Silver, who also suggest extra help will come by way of medi kits scattered across the map.

As is demonstrated in the above trailer, destructible environments appear to offer new forms of defense against the undead onslaught, and, as the original Deadlight encouraged exploration, you can bet yer boots bonus health and ammo stashes lurk behind the less obvious manipulable backdrops this time round.

I always felt Deadlight shone in the moments it let you freely explore its bounds, so I'm intrigued to see how how, or indeed if, this plays out against waves of blood-thirsty zombies. Finding new nooks and crannies while under pressure could prove good fun. Survival Arena mode will also include a leaderboard where players are ranked by their survival times.

"You will not survive," boasts the end of the trailer. If you're willing to take up the challenge, Deadlight: Director's Cut is due for release on June 21, 2016 for $19.99.
