Even The Ocean Is Being Released Next Week
Even which ocean?
I mean the videogame with the title Even The Ocean [official site] is being released. I’m not just making a general statement about the whole sea being unleashed in a torrent of human-hating rage some time next Wednesday. Although that could also happen. As for the game, it’s from the creators of the mysterious Anodyne, a difficult-to-describe arcade RPG which left Adam swooning a few years ago. This time they’ve made an action platformer in which you have to balance your character’s energies to control the speed of both vertical and horizontal movement. But of course, there's a detailed story bubbling underneath it all. You can see what it looks like in the trailer below.
You play as Aliph, a power plant worker who finds herself working with the Mayor to save her home city from environmental catastrophe. For a better idea of what you’ll be doing, here’s some of the developers’ bulletpoints. I know you can’t get enough of bulletpoints.
- Balance your energy bar with Light and Dark energies to overcome diverse obstacles and stabilize the city.
- Meet and talk with new friends, powerful allies, and enigmatic travellers
- Explore the beautiful and strange geography in the overworld, towns, and environments surrounding Whiteforge City
- Super customizable difficulties and play styles: choose between Complete, Story-only, or Gameplay-only options to make your experience your own
The last time we heard of it, there was a demo. But that’s gone now. You were too slow. We don't know how much has changed since then but, thematically, the idea of managing a meter of two competing energies has stuck around. The creators, Sean Han-Tani-Chen-Hogan and Joni Kittaka, said they were interested in “looking at the theme of balance in humans’ every day lives (how one manages relationships, emotions, etc.)” Did you hear that? Emotions. It’s going to be filthy.
It's coming out November 16 on Steam, itch.io, GOG, Green Man Gaming, and Humble Store. So, er, you'll probably see it around.
