Let's be nicer people this year, okay?
2019 is off to a great start
We don’t really cover situations in the games industry that amount to ‘terrible people in being terrible scandal’ because it doesn’t tend to help, but today I am quite cross at the Overwatch pro-player who quit after a firestorm of awfulness exploded almost immediately when she was announced as a player for the team Second Wind.
I’m not immersed in esports, so I’ll hold my hands up and say I don’t know exactly how the Contenders set up works. It seems that people were immediately suspicious that Ellie’s full name wasn’t revealed on Second Wind’s roster like the other players, leading to speculation that Ellie was a secret identity for another player, possible a male pro who… wanted to prove… something…? It was also apparently an issue that nobody knew her as a player before she suddenly whizzed into the top ten DPS rankings. Thus: scrutiny, threats of doxxing, angry Tweets.
