Time Barons is an incredible card game that makes the wait for Spelunky 2 more bearable

Ahead of its time

Matthew and I were playing some board games with a couple of friends over the weekend, and lo and behold, who should be one of the designers behind our first game of the night but Spelunky man Derek Yu. All right, so he didn't actually create the incredible Time Barons - a sort of cooperative card game in which you must crush the opposing team's population using various weapons and bits of tech from throughout the ages - but he did help finalise the design of the game and make all the art for the cards that come with it - which, I'm sure you'll agree (just look at that magnificent clock!) is pretty damn amazing.

I just wish I was better at it. It wasn't as bad as the time I was convinced Matthew was Hitler in Secret Hitler and ended up killing him when he really wasn't, but it came pretty close. Lesson learned: never put me in a position of power, because I will abuse it and ruin every chance of success in the process.

Katharine is RPS' editor-in-chief, which means she's now to blame for all this. After joining the team in 2017, she spent four years in the RPS hardware mines. Now she leads the RPS editorial team and plays pretty much anything she can get her hands on. She's very partial to JRPGs and the fetching of quests, but also loves strategy and turn-based tactics games and will never say no to a good Metroidvania.
