Who U Gonna Call? Activision Reveal New Ghostbusters

Grab yer proton pack this July

There'd have been somethin' strange in the neighbourhood indeed had a Ghostbusters game not surfaced in concert with this year's incoming movie. Lo and behold, the medium of cinema and videogames have crossed the streams: Activision have teamed up with Sony Pictures to announce a third-person action RPG with local co-op leanings, based on the supernatural slaying service. It'll launch alongside this summer's silver screen outing.

Named simply Ghostbusters, Activision say the game will take place after the events of the new film but won't feature any of its characters. They're off saving New York City from "high profile poltergeists", you see, so you're instead charged with leading a team of new recruits into top-down isometric action. And when I say action, I mean watching over the station and zapping ghosts while the top dogs are otherwise engaged. No word on whether you'll be sweeping up and cleaning the toilets too, but I sure as hell ain't touching the cubicles after Slimer's been in there.

Activision haven't named a developer yet, but they did offer a wee description as to what Ghostbusters is all about:

"Ghostbusters, is a third-person action role-playing game positively charged for thrilling couch co-op with up to four players locally. As rookie Ghostbusters, players can level up their characters’ gear and abilities by tackling objectives, defeating ghastly creatures and discovering hidden collectibles in Manhattan’s most haunted haunts. There are four heroes to choose from, and each has his or her own unique personality and play style, bringing special strengths to support the team."

And here's the trailer that launched alongside the announcement:

Ghostbusters is due for release for PC via Steam on July 15 this year, the same day as the new movie.
