Revived: Mortal Kombat XL PC Open Beta Now Live

Leatherface and an Alien

It seemed that Warner Bros. had given up on the PC version of Mortal Kombat X [official site]. The fighting game's last DLC, adding new pugilists including the Texas Chain Saw Massacre's Leatherface and one of those there Aliums out the Alium films, was not released on PC. Nor was the new 'Mortal Kombat XL' version which brought better netcode (plus all the DLC) to the console version. It seemed like, after that whole Batman fuss, Warner Bros. were backing away from PC. Well! MKXL is coming our way, goofy characters and all, and we can all try it in an open beta this weeked.

"Thanks for your patience as we've been quiet for a while," the WB gang said in a Steam post last night. "We've been working behind the scenes updating MKX on PC and wanted to make sure when we had something to share with you, it was good news."

It is: head on over to MKX's Steam page and you can download the MKXL Online Enhanced Beta to "experience the enhanced rollback system and other updates made for our PC players." The open beta is a 30GB download and yes, and it does include that DLC we never received. The beta will run until 10am PDT (6pm UK time) on Monday.

No word yet on how Mortal Kombat XL will actually launch on PC, mind. You'd hope that, after all this mess, they might try to earn back good will by not charging for XL like they did on consoles.

Anyway, those DLC characters are a little bit wacky! Here, check out this Alium, which I believe is Baraka's baby (hence all the spikes):

And remember Leatherface, yeah? With all his special moves?

I still think that if Warner Bros. are going goofy, they should embrace all the characters and people they have across their media empire. Night Court, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars, Wile E. Coyote, Madonna, R.E.M., Linkin Park... so much potential!
