Castle Crashers Remastered Announced

Fight!

Castle Crashers [official site] is being remastered, despite only being released... oh, eight years ago? Yeah, fair enough then. I guess The Behemoth realised that they've not managed to outdo themselves in the years since, so may as well try and sell us the same game again. And we'll buy it, because Castle Crashers remains the best side scrolling co-op brawler since the days of the Mega Drive. Though, PC people will need to wait a little longer than our Xbox One counterparts.

The remaster will feature improved textures (5 times the size of the original versions), an uncapped framerate, a new minigame and various other smaller improvements and tweaks. Which, now that I think about it, doesn't seem quite enough to warrant a full re-release (on a platform that has the original, anyway). It will all depend on price and whether it'll be a standalone game on Steam, or an update. It'll be a while before we find out, since development on the Steam version of Castle Crashers Remastered isn't due to start until "later this year". Considering it took four years for the game to jump from XBLA to Steam in the first place, we could be in for a long wait.

The new minigame, Back Off Barbarian, is explained in the announcement blog post. I don't know whether it's a testament to the original game's 2D artwork, or an indication that the remaster is completely unnecessary, but it doesn't look noticeably different from the first Castle Crashers release. Maybe the improvements are visible if you watch the two side by side.

Point is, if you haven’t played Castle Crashers yet, you should probably just grab it in the Steam sale. And make sure you play with friends.
