How to unlock the Mysterious Switch

Here, we’ll give you a nice step-by-step guide on how to get into the secret rooms unlocked by the Mysterious Switch, which will help you solve the secret Dartmoor endings.

Get into Emma and Gregory’s room

First up, you need to get into Emma and Gregory’s room. In order to do this, you can pick up a key - check out our page on where to find all the Dartmoor manor keys for more on that. Alternatively, you can jimmy the door with a lockpick or crowbar, or climb out the window of the bathroom next to it to climb around onto the bedroom balcony. Either way, hop into the bedroom unseen.

Emma and Gregory room clues

Emma and Gregory’s room has four clues you’ll need to pick up. If you do the ‘Means, Motive And Opportunity’ mission story they’ll be counted out in your Intel screen, but if not, here’s what you need to keep an eye out for:

  • Letter From Emma’s Mother - on the bedside table
  • Greenhouse Key Chain - on the floor by the suitcases and privacy screen
  • Shoes and Footprints - get the camera out and scan the floor next to the wardrobe
  • Bulldog Cane - leaning against the chest of drawers by the door

The one you might’ve missed is the bulldog cane, also described as the ‘walking cane’ when you’re prompted to pick it up. Don’t worry, it’s easy to find and is essential to opening the Mysterious Switches.

What does the cane do?

The game will warn you with a red triangle when you’re prompted to pick the cane up, but don’t worry about this - no one is around to see you pick it up and you’re absolutely fine to walk around the house already holding it. You can’t put it in your inventory though, so be careful not to drop it. The cane can be used as a non-lethal weapon and picking it up completes the ‘D’ya Like Dags’ challenge for Dartmoor.

It’s also the key to opening the Mysterious Switch.

Activate the Mysterious Switch

Leave Emma and Gregory’s room and turn right. Head down the hallway and hang a left after you go through the door past the mirror. Look at the ground by the bookshelf and use the cane on the Mysterious Switch. This’ll open the hidden door, and you can walk on in uninterrupted. You won’t get told off for this unless you’re already trespassing.

You can also use the cane to open the secret rooms elsewhere in the house, including the weird red cushion room on the side of Alexa’s office.
