Resident Evil 7: Biohazard footage returns to domesticity

The magic is back without the Jill sandwich.

I've been avidly following the development of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard [official site], though I must say it's not been without some trepidation. Resident Evil 6 did so much to destroy the image of Capcom's venerable series I feared it may not be able to make a comeback.

Fortunately, the team behind Resident Evil 7: Biohazard seems to realize that the only way to go forward with the series is to go back. RE7 takes inspiration from the haunting atmosphere and foreboding loneliness of the original Resident Evil.

For a series that coined the term "survival horror," the last couple of main series entries had little of both of those aspects. These eight minutes of gameplay show that Resident Evil 7 is a return to type for the series. It's easy to draw a parallel between the Bakers and Lisa Trevor from the Resident Evil Remake. The creaky old Louisiana mansion also seems to have just as many secrets as the Arklay Mansion where the series got its beginning, and finding out those secrets is going to be a disturbing and thrilling adventure.

If you're as excited as I am to enter the world of survival horror again, you don't have long to wait. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard releases worldwide January 24, 2017.
