Feature: It's expensive, but the Valve Index is the best VR headset by a country mile

Valve Index review: the gold standard for VR headsets

When the Oculus Rift S offers a pretty darn great VR experience for £399 / $399, is there really any reason to spend upwards of a grand on a headset like the £919 / $999 Valve Index? Probably not if, like the rest of us, you don't have a spare mattress full of cash squirrelled away in your back bedroom. However, if you do fall…

What’s the best VR headset for Half-Life: Alyx?

Half-Life: Alyx may have been built from the ground up to support Valve's super expensive Index headset, but as you may have seen from my Half-Life: Alyx PC requirements and VR headset specs article, you can actually play it on any VR headset that supports SteamVR, including the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift headsets and any Windows Mixed Reality headset. Heck, you can even play Half-Life:…

The Valve Index VR headset is back in stock, for now

The Valve Index headset is back in stock. There, that's the post. Seriously though, it's been a bit of a ride the last few weeks watching the upcoming VR-only Half-Life game creep closer as Valve's own VR headset remained out of stock. Half-Life: Alyx, is releasing later this month and it looked like the Index wouldn't get back on the digital shelf in time. You can now…

You can walk around some Half-Life: Alyx environments in VR now, so I have

Half-Life: Alyx is so close I've started rearranging furniture in my house so I'll have more space to play it. I don't need to wait any longer if I want to visit a couple of the game's environments with my headset, however. Last night, Valve released two areas from HL: Alyx for use in SteamVR Home - that's the staging area you appear inside when…

Valve Index restock rumoured for Monday – and folks have strange plans for how to buy it

Rumour has it that the Valve Index will be back in stock on Monday, March 9th, and Valve expect their VR headsets to sell right back out the same day. They sold out months ago and manufacturing has been disrupted by the Covid-19 virus, see, and now demand is extra high thanks to the impending launch of Half-Life: Alyx. I am surprised to learn demand…

Valve say coronavirus impacting production of Index VR sets

Earlier this week, Valve's Index VR set was still sold out almost entirely around the globe just a month away from their own upcoming VR-only Half-Life: Alyx. No official word had come from Valve on the cause for the short stock or any estimate on when more units would be available. Previously we were only able to speculate on the cause for the hangup. Valve…

A month before Half-Life: Alyx, Valve’s Index headset is still sold out

Half-Life: Alyx is barely a month out now, scheduled to release on March 23rd. When it was originally announced as a VR-only title, Valve's own Index VR headset quickly flew off physical shelves and was entirely sold out online by mid-January in all 31 countries where it's sold. As reported by Road To VR, the Index is still all but sold out globally.

Steam Charts: Recycled Air Edition

There is nothing worse for a world-leading chartologist (PhD) like me than a Steam sale. All sense is lost, all decorum thrown to the wind, as the same few games come stamping all over everything like an uninvited six year old whose parents let him go to bed whenever he wants. And we're entering Sale Season, people. It's going to get stampy.

People, I face a dilemma. (Great cars, them Dilemmas. - Ed) This week Destiny 2 takes up an astonishing five out of ten spaces on the Charts. So what's a professional games journalist of 20 years experience to do? Write ten octopus facts in less detail but with more jokes, or six more involved entries perhaps better celebrating our cephalopod friends? I've opted for the…

Steam Charts: Spooky Action Edition

As planet Earth continues its inexorable trajectory toward the encroaching black hole, and ever more aspects of our daily lives are being affected, even the weekly Steam Charts are feeling its affliction. This may seem a more trivial aspect of our final months, but I believe it's vital to recognise the severity of the impact here to better understand the wider implications for how deeply calamitous…

Oculus Quest’s cameras could make VR controllers a thing of the past

VR is still a niche. The cost, the hardware, the distinct lack of a killer app (though Google Earth is amazing in VR). There are still a lot of hurdles, though one of those might have just fallen. Oculus just announced a new method of tracking that could make controllers redundant. The Oculus Quest’s cameras can be used to track the user's hands and fingers,…
