Diablo 2 celebrates its 20th anniversary today but no such luck for a remaster

Middle child of the series Diablo 2 turns 20 today, prompting plenty of reminiscing about the landmark loot 'em up RPG. Blizzard are celebrating with merchandise, speedruns, and an in-game costume for Diablo 3. Unfortunately, an official Diablo 2 remaster rumored last week (which Blizzard quickly denied) doesn't appear to be in the cards. Ah well, thanks for the memories anyhow D2.

Minecraft Dungeons has a secret cow level

In homage to one of the all-time action-RPG greats, Minecraft Dungeons has a secret level where you can fight herds of murderous cattle. Mojang's own action-RPG launched this morning, and folks have already discovered a nod to Diablo's infamous cow level, where wizards will be sent to mow down hordes of mooing mobs sprouting mushrooms. Killing cows: a cornerstone of the genre.

Rumour: Diablo 2 is getting a remastered release this year

Hell might freeze over before we hear more about Diablo IV, but you might not have to wait too long before facing off with the devil once more. Emissaries from Hell (well, France) suggest that Blizzard are working on a remaster of Diablo II, reportedly summoning a modern rerelease of the series highlight by the end of the year.

Feature: One Off The List

The 10 best hells in PC games

“Hell is other people,” wrote Jean-Paul Sartre. “But also my favourite level in Doom.” He was a smart man, and he probably lives in hell now, on account of all the atheism. But listen, hell doesn’t seem that bad. Bit hot. Bit demonic. You could do a lot worse than a trip to the underworld, is what I’m saying, and as luck would have it,…

Diablo 2 is actually the best Diablo game

"O, what a tangled web we weave when first we practise to deceive!” Popeye the sailor man once famously said. A few weeks ago Graham messaged me and said we were refreshing our list of the best RPGs. "Which Diablo game should go on it?" he asked me, the Diablo liker on the editorial team. "Diablo II or Diablo III?"

Gears Of War studio head is joining Blizzard to oversee Diablo

Rod Fergusson has worked on every Gears Of War game over the last 15 years, from starting the original Gears Of War with Epic, to helping establish The Coalition studio to work on the rest of the series. But now he's heading to pastures new, joining Blizzard to oversee all things Diablo."Leaving is bittersweet as I love our Gears family, the fans, and everyone at…

BlizzCon’s Diablo announcement was a mobile game, not Diablo 4 (obvs)

Ahead of BlizzCon, Blizzard had hinted that they were announcing something Diablo-related but clarified it would not be "what many of you are hoping for". Yeah, but they would say it wasn't Diablo 4 even if it was going to be Diablo 4, wouldn't they? Reader, it was not Diablo 4. Blizzard last night announced Diablo Immortal, a new entry in the action-RPG series... for…

Feature: The existence of Diablo III kind of spoils the ending

Have You Played… Diablo II?

I liked playing Diablo III because so much of it is like Diablo II. And Diablo II is amazing - especially if you got the Lord of Destruction expansion, which added a whole fifth act and two character classes. In fact, one of those classes is the Assassin, and she’s the coolest, so we should probably consider Lord of Destruction as the definitive way to…

Necromancers And Diablo 1 Remake Coming To Diablo 3

Update: Yikes! Blizzard has confirmed The Darkening of Tristram will be an event taking place in Diablo III in January, and will return annually (side note: holiday events seem to be all the rage right now) as an anniversary-themed homage. The event will be home to some exclusive loot, including the soulstone from the original Diablo along with the Butcher's clever and Wirt's leg. Keen…

He Was The Lore: Blizzard’s Chris Metzen Retires

Blizzard lorelord Chris Metzen ('senior vice president of story and franchise development', if you want to be technical) has handed in his badge and his loregiver (his keyboard, obvs) and taken The Long Walk into The Cursed Earth (idk, Reddit?). After nearly 23 years of laying down the lore and voicing characters from Thrall to the good ol' Terran Battlecruiser, Metzen last night announced his…

Diablo II Now Has Better Support For Modern OSes

Last year, we were briefly excited at the prospect of Blizzard revamping some of their older games, as a job listing made clear they were looking for a software engineer to work on Diablo II, Warcraft III and the first StarCraft. Our hopes were dialled down when Blizzard clarified that their goal was simply to "maintain our legacy games." It seems that goal has borne…

Seems Blizzard Are Revamping Diablo 2, StarCraft, WC3

[Update: Oh! Blizzard told GameSpot it's simply to maintain them. Dreams are always so short-lived. Hey, maybe do consider revamping them though! That would be lovely. Official support for modern resolutions in Diablo II would be a grand start.]Once a games studio has been around for long enough, different generations of players will each have their own idea of the devs' finest days. Perhaps like…

RPS Discusses: Do Expansion Packs Still Matter?

Expansion packs were once a core part of playing PC games, but they can often feel less essential in a world of constant updates and microtransactions. Original game Alec, expansions Adam and Graham, and brief DLC Alice gathered to discuss their favourite game expansions and why they still think the model works.

Young people. Good grief. Your ignorance is as plain as those spots on your greasy face. Don't you know anything? Can't you be bothered to learn anything? Diablo II Is Also Ten Years Old

For some reason we didn't go massively overboard on the coverage for that one. Nevertheless I'm fairly certain that there will be some RPS readers with fond memories of this one. At least one of my good friends is still playing it today, which always strikes me as a little nutty, but there we are.Happy Birthday (yesterday), Diablo II.

Mod Magic: New Diablo II Resolutions

We've done some psychic research and are aware quite how many Diablo II fans there are reading. Loads of you. So there should be some smiles at the news that there's an unofficial patch to finally let you play it at a decent resolution. If you're still playing the game, and we know you are, you'll know the frustration of the limitations. Fret no more!…
