Off The Wall: Rocket League's Three-Laned Pillar Arena

Triple threat

One of the many things I love about Rocket League [official site] is that developers Psyonix have kept adding to their ball-cage-car 'em up since its launch last year. Part of their Rocket Labs casual playlist, Pillars is a new prototype level coming to the RPS game of 2015 next month that'll significantly alter the playing field by dividing it into three lanes.

Rocket Labs, in case you've forgotten, is test-drive prototype maps. If players respond well to Labs maps, Psyonix say they'll consider redesigning them with full artwork. Anyway, available in both online and exhibition modes, Pillars is the next in line and will add two towering floor-to-ceiling uprights onto the middle of the pitch, creating three separate channels for multi-wall maneuvering.

Which should really shake up regular play. Maybe you'll use the monoliths to send goalkeepers flapping, reeling as your shot ricochets in the opposite direction. Perhaps you'll use the walls to play deft one-two passes, so as to skip past oncoming opponents as you bear down on goal. Then again, maybe the addition of Pillars will create new opportunities for you to learn how to fly.

"The visual aesthetic for 'Pillars' will continue its tipped hat towards virtual-reality — only this time, with a gameplay emphasis on using multiple walls to your advantage," say Psyonix. "Banking shots off the tall columns in the middle of the arena makes for some incredible moments and driving up the walls and flying down on the competition feels just right."

Pillars will enter the Rocket Labs playlist as part of next month's June update.
