Torchlight studio Runic shut down, Gigantic devs also almost closed

The owners of Torchlight developers Runic Games, the Chinese free-to-play-focused publisher Perfect World Entertainment, confirmed today that it has shut down Runic's Seattle studio. Seeing as that's Runic's only studio, er, that's them basically gone - though their games will live on. This comes barely one month after Runic released Hob. Perfect World have also laid off most the team at Motiga, the studio behind…

Have You Played… Torchlight?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time. I admit, I missed the first two Diablos at the time. Yes, yes, think of me what you will, but I did. I've made up for it since, and the genre is one of my absolute favourite ways to while away merry time.…

Hot Loot: Torchlight For Free

You've played Torchlight by now, right? Y'know, Torchlight: fine little action-RPG released in 2009 by Runic Games. Y'know, Runic: founded by the Diablo-co-designing Schaefer brothers and Fate chap Travis Baldree (at the time, anyway - Erich Schaefer and Baldree have since moved on), bringing along Diablo musicman Matt Uelmen. Given how many times it's been on sale or offered as a freebie to entice folks…

Rebel Galaxy: Ex-Torchlight Folks’ Space Sandbox

A crafty crew of space-outlaws can scrape by on the edge of known space by trading, stealing, scavenging, negotiating, exploring, and fighting as long as they have a reliable spaceship, popular media tells me. Now imagine such an outfit of scamps in control of a destroyer bristling with guns. That's Rebel Galaxy, the first game from Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer's new outfit Double Damage…

Runic To The Hills: Founders Depart Torchlight Developer

Huh. Well, this is kinda unexpected. Runic, the band of former Diablo devs that produced Torchlight and the especially excellent Torchlight II, have just lost two key members. Founders Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer are departing the little ARPG studio that could because, er, it apparently grew too large for their tastes. 20 people under one roof? You're practically Ubisoft at that point. For real, though,…

GoG Summer Sale Begins, Torchlight Currently Free

Let there be Torchlight. The ARPG's sequel thoroughly impressed John and the original is free until June 20th as part of Good Old Games' summer sale. So Runic, What’s Next After Torchlight II?

It's been a long road to the release of Torchlight II. Not Diablo III long, mind you, but it technically started with the original Torchlight, which didn't even release until 2009. And all the while, there's been Torchlight ports and constant demand for a Torchlight MMO - among other things. I wouldn't be surprised if talk of Torchlight-branded torches, lights, and lighters crept into the…

Humble Rumbles Anew: PWYW Torchlight, Vessel, SPAZ

Somehow bearing the numeral '6' after it, despite there having been at least 40,000 Humble Bundles by this point, the latest in the wildly successful series of pay-what-you-want indie grab-bags is go right now. Torchlight is the headliner, which is some funny timin' what with the sequel being pretty darn close now, and it has sterling support from Rochard, Space Pirates And Zombies (aka SPAZ),…

Wot I Think: Dungeon Siege III

The third siege of dungeons arrived a little while back, with Obsidian taking the reins of the Gas-Powered Games-created loot'n'kill fandango. I've been frantically clicking my mouse button at it for the last few days - an act which I have now transmuted into some words. First point of interest for me in any dungeon crawler: can I summon animals? Silently beating up monsters in…

The Human Torch: Torchlight MMO Details

News arrives! VG247 and Shacknews are travelling across the land, spreading news that jaunty tribute blog PC Gamer has revealed a couple of choice quotes from Runic's President Travis Baldree their new issue. The topic? The forthcoming Torchlight MMO. Key points would be "our vision is to have an MMO that plays as close to single player as we can get it." - as in,…

Lighting It Up: Runic Investment And Sales

Runic, the folks behind Diablo-like dungeon-crawler Torchlight - which we talked about favourably when it arrived - have done rather well for themselves. It seems that Torchlight shifted 500k copies, and set Runic up to sell a large stake of themselves to Chinese MMO-imperialists Perfect World (for $8.4m, which would buy a lot of Peggles.) All of which bodes well for the previously mooted Torchlight…

Torchlight’s Editor Is Around The Corner

Dunno about you, but I got pretty burned-out after a few days of psychotic grinding at Torchlight, feeling that, despite the fun I'd had, everything had gotten too samey. So the news of the impending editor, and the vast glut of moddery it promises, is good news - it hopefully means the game's rather limited environments can be shaken up some, and we can have…

Euro-Words: Torchlight, Assassin’s Creed 2

Back from a quasi-week in foreign climes, I return to discover Eurogamer has published some writing they recklessly hired me to write. There's a preview of Assassin's Creed 2, detailing what I found when I nosed at the first couple of hours of the game, and perhaps more interestingly, there's my review of Torchlight. In it, I claim that absolutely everything Walker said it about…

Illuminating Torchlight Footage

We're particularly excited about Runic Games' upcoming dungeon crawler, Torchlight. It's looking incredibly slick and colourful, just the kind of thing that jiggles the lock on our treasure chest. Seeing it in action gives us a little more to be excited about, and thankfully some more in-game footage has appeared. This time it's showing off one of the classes, The Vanquisher, who seems like badass…
