Labyrinth of Refrain – retro dungeons in Disgaea’s style

Labyrinth of Refrain : Coven of Dusk

Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk is an old-school dungeon delver from Disgaea studio Nippon Ichi, in the style of Sir-tech’s classic Wizardry games. Assemble an entirely custom party, loot, level and explore¬†dungeon mazes¬†in first person while trying not to lose too many of your characters to greed, overconfidence and bad luck before you can return to the surface to restock. It’s launching this September.

Disgaea 5 Complete delayed days before launch

NIS’s strategy RPG Disgaea 5 Complete was due to launch on PC on Monday but oh me oh my that will not happen now. NIS have delayed the game to an unspecified point in summer, saying they’ve found a big problem that needs extra time to fix. Another big problem has been that the recent limited-release demo, er, reportedly let people play the full game if they were willing to futz with some files. Oh dear. So the demo has been pulled, the game is delayed, and NIS are offering refunds to people who pre-ordered. Read the rest of this entry »

The Longest Five Minutes

The Longest Five Minutes begins where most games end: the final boss. Plonked in front of an unholy baddie, the hero of this quaintly old-fashioned JRPG has only five minutes with which to pummel them off the face of the earth. It sounds like a pretty short game, but thanks to the awesome power of extended, time-dilating flashbacks, those five minutes are soon blown wide open. Essentially this is a standard-ish JRPG told out of order, and that’s a novel enough hook for me to look at the Steam page and not dismiss this retro-styled adventure out of hand. It helps that it’s the work of Disgaea developers Nippon Ichi.

Hey Dood: Disgaea 2 Coming To PC In January 2017

The Windows debut of long-running zany JRPG series Disgaea was less than dazzling but I’m glad Nippon Ichi Software stuck with it. A few patches fixed a lot of the PC port’s problems, and now NIS have announced they’re continuing the series. Disgaea 2 [official site] will be round our way on January 30th, 2017 – a decade ater its PlayStation 2 debut. It sounds like NIS have learned from the last one, as they’re boasting about a few touches of fanciness.

Grind-o! Japanese RPG Disgaea Coming To PC In 2016

Someone, somewhere, has been keeping JRPGs in a cage in the woods. Perhaps the jailor died, or perhaps the JRPGs rose up and killed them, as now a steady trickle of them are emerging from the trees emaciated, bloodied and gasping, calling out for new players. 2003’s Disgaea [official site] is the latest coming our way, another grindomatic tactical RPG. The series may be up to Disgaea 5 on console, but we’re starting at the start, albeit with a fancy revamped version.
