Here Are 7 Minutes Of Serious Sam’s Bogus Detour

Do you remember Hammerwatch? It was a fantasy-themed hack and slash that survived the greenlight and released to great reception back in 2013. Developers Crackshell (formerly Transflash) have taken the same formula, applied abundant doses of ᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAA, and shook firmly.

What came out is Serious Sam’s Bogus Detour [TIGSource thread] a frantic 2D shooter, all action and no philosophy, unlike its bigger brother. There is no planned release date, but there are plenty of videos and gifs to watch.

Bogus Detour will be a pure old-school, fast-paced shooter in the vein of Gauntlet and Alien Breed. The campaign should be 3-4 hours long, with the option to play with another Sam or in Single Player. There will also be a Versus mode, and the game will be highly moddable, much more so than Hammerwatch, so user-created content should keep players entertained even after they see all the content planned by the developers.

These are 7 minutes from the game as it is now, because actions speak louder than ᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAA.

It may still be in pre-alpha, but it looks very complete already: voice acting, animations, sound effects, even secrets are already in.

Crackshell have documented the development over at TIG Source, with plenty of images, gifs, videos and insights about their creative process. They’ve already revealed their weapons and power-ups, including classics like the flak cannon and tommy gun, and showed the new game engine that they’re developing alongside the game itself.

As for me, it may not be representative of the mood of the game, but I just like this peaceful idle animation.

After reading the previous article on the HTC Vive, I kinda want this to have VR support just because of the bloody decadence of it…

  2. Napalm Sushi says:

I mainly remember Hammerwatch for its nostalgic phosphor and screen curve effects. I’ve rarely been so convinced that I’m looking at a CRT screen.

Wow, this looks so great! Are these Serious Sam assets or is it just the name? I think I will create a Doom mod for this game :D

  4. Raoul Duke says:

This looks awesome! Sort of how I might have imagined games would develop after about 1993 if everything hadn’t gone 3D.

Little hints of Cannon Fodder, Syndicate, Commander Keen and about a million top down arcade games.

  5. caff says:

Looks good, although I’m not entirely sure about the rolling mechanic, it looks and sounds a bit annoying.

It actually looks like the sort of game I’ve been wanting to play for a while – are there any other games similar to this? I’ve tried Nuclear Throne but that’s just a bit too mental for me.
