You can respec Thor, the Hulk, and the rest of the team in Marvel's Avengers

Avengers reassemble!

As we now know, the upcoming Marvel's Avengers is set in a time where the superhero team has been disbanded and it’s up to Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel) to grab Thor, entice Iron Man, and unsulk the Hulk. Basically she’s reassembling the Avengers, trying to bring them together to fight off the evil organisation that's taken over in the vacuum the Avengers left behind. And when she does, you can add a few personal touches to each hero.

We’ve seen how each hero can tackle a challenge, but what’s news to me is that the Avengers won’t be locked down into their iconic roles. According to Studio Creative Director at Crystal Dynamics, Noah Hughes: “One player might play Thor as an AOE damage dealer controlling the crowd, but an ally could build him up primarily focused on melee tactics.” I will play him as a silly man with a nice smile.

That’s done with a collection of systems. Skills and gear can craft a whole new hero from the classic template, with further customisation via rarity, stats, and perks. Each hero will have their own recognisable skills and abilities, but you can add your own flair to that base and end up with a Ms. Marvel capable of throwing an enemy over a mountain.

I’m into that. It feels like it’s been a while since I played a superhero game that properly put a superhero's strength into perspective and wanged an enemy into orbit.

Khan rebuilds the team from the discomfort of a crashed Helicarrier, which also give you access to the Wartable. It's here that missons are picked up. Hero missions make up the single-player campaign and are all built around each hero to showcase just how handsome and wonderful they are (I’m obviously thinking about Thor). Warzone missions can be played solo, or with up to groups of four players, and will offer a broader range of Marvel mashing, scaling according to the team and its size. You can even ignore the single-player stuff and jump right into the co-op missions, but that will send you headfirst into spoiler land.

The game is out on May 15th 2020, with the promise of a lot of post-release heroes and stories coming afterwards. According to Square Enix: "Marvel’s Avengers narrative will progress over multiple years with every new post-release Super Hero and region delivered to players at no additional cost if you own the core game."

Nice.
