Dead Island Gets A 2D Side-Scrolling Spin-Off

Retro Revenge out in August

Dead Island continues to be the series that I don't hear many people asking to keep on giving, but keeps on giving nonetheless. Next up is Retro Revenge, a side-scrolling, 2D, pseudo-16-bit, cat-centric beat 'em up set in the Dead Island universe (that being "a particularly sweary zombie apocalypse and something something backwards trailers). It's out this Summer, both on its own and as part of a bundle with the first two DIs.

A trailer for you. N.B. features Naughty Swears and someone pretending to be Jack Black:

As you can see, Retro Revenge's plot concerns Not Jack Black trying to get his cat back during zombie Armageddon. There are combos and bosses and all that jazz, and it's melee rather than gun-focused, so perhaps some Streets Of Rage itches can be scratched.

The game's clearly going pretty all-out, with some of its scenes for some reason reminding me of the old, totally batshit Aliens coin-op.

Release date is August 1st, and it'll cost £3.99/$4.99 or be part of the £11.99/$19.99 Dead Island Definitive Edition, which comprises this, the first game and Riptide. The devs are one Empty Clip Studios, who seem to have made quite the departure from their previous Audiosurf/Geometry Wars combo Symphony.
