Just Cause 3 multiplayer mod parachutes onto Steam next week

Viva La Revolution! The Just Cause 3 Multiplayer [official site] mod is ready to come out of its six-month-long beta, and version 1.0 will blast onto Steam next week (20th July). Essentially, it allows 100 players at a time to muck about in Medici, racing cars, dog-fighting jets, pulling off stunts, blowing up buildings and crashing boats. It's going to be absolute carnage, isn't it?

This is not a fully online version of Just Cause 3 or anything like that – there's no NPCs or story. It's basically a sandbox, and a tool with which the community can create custom game modes that others can then play through.

The trailer below shows just some of the possibilities, every one of which ends in a massive explosion.

It's the result of nearly two year's work from a team of modders called Nanos and I'm really, really glad it's finally (officially) here. Just Cause 3 was a ridiculous triump, but it was crying out for the option of inviting your mates along for the ride.

Now, some features aren't quite ready for version 1.0, and will instead arrive in version 1.1, for which there's no ETA yet. The biggest of those is tethering: that thing you've probably seen people do in Just Cause 3 videos (or, you know, done it yourself if you've got the game) where you can tie two things together in hilarious ways. Tie an explosive gas cannister to a man. Tie a flying plane to a tower. Tie your shoelaces together. Things like that.

At launch you won't be able to change your skin either, but that will come soon. Now that it's on Steam you can expect the mod to get regular support and updates. In a Q&A this week, the team said they will "share more information and a detailed list of things planned for 1.1 very soon", so look out for that.

This could make me dip back into Just Cause 3 again. Are you planning a return to Medici?
