Observer and Alan Wake’s American Nightmare are this week’s Epic Games Store giveaways

It's Thursday again, meaning its time for Epic's ongoing cycle of free games to tick over once again. This week's offerings are grimy cyberpunk horror Observer and bizarre spin-off Alan Wake's American Nightmare. That'll be that sorted for some low-lit thrills, then. As per, you've only got seven days to grab these freebies before they slink back into the shadows from whence they came.

Surviving Mars is now free on the Epic Games Store

The latest game giveaway on the Epic Games Store is Surviving Mars, 2018's city-builder about raising Martian colonies from dust. Yes, absolutely this process involves a large number of potatoes. The Space Race expansion is free too, as is the wee musical Marsvision Song Contest DLC (sadly just more soundtrack songs, not an actual contest - I wish!). You've got one week to get onboard…

Steam Remote Play now has default finger layouts for its most played games

Valve's Steam Remote Play app is one of those little cul-de-sacs that Steam has that is generally very useful, but if you didn't know about it you probably wouldn't have bothered to seek it out. It lets you stream your games from your PC to weaker hardware, like a tablet or a phone, almost certainly while on the toilet. On a phone, something like this…

Epic Games Store paid £8.43 million for Control exclusive

Epic Games Store exclusives are everyone's favourite subject that nobody dreads writing about at all. Fortunately, some specific numbers have recently emerged to hopefully replace the speculation. Remedy Entertainment's Control was subject to an exclusivity deal, as we reported back in March. Epic apparently valued Control at a chunky $10.45 million (roughly £8.43 million, or almost twenty train tickets), according to recent financial report released…

Batman is free in both Lego and Arkham flavours on the Epic Games Store

Light the candles, roast the goose, Father Epic has come to town. Bearing gifts of cost-free games, he's telling tale of a masked menace from a far-off metropolis. Clad in black and the cowl of a bat - what delightful nonsense! For the younger children, a toy-like series of marvels await in the Lego Batman trilogy. Ah, and for you older rascals, the Arkham series…

Inside and Celeste are free on the Epic Games Store now

"Inside does insert some big ideas into its slender and sinister frame, but that's not why I loved it – it's the execution of the big, broad, b-movie elements that I adored," our former Adam (RPS in peace) said when we called Inside one of 2016's best games. "It's a tricky platform game, with a beautifully melancholy story, and enough creativity on show to give…

Epic and their latest indie exclusives talk about what it gives them, and maybe us too

Epic’s expansion from developer to distributor continues apace. Having secured exclusive distribution rights to some of this year’s biggest PC games, such as Metro Exodus, The Division 2 and Remedy’s Control, today Epic announced partnerships with a swathe of independent developers. Games such as Manifold Garden, Superliminal, No Straight Roads and Airborne Kingdom will all have their initial PC launches exclusively on the Epic Store,…

Free hat game! Fez is free on Epic’s Store right now, with Celeste and Inside coming next week

You could put together a decent indie games showcase for nothing just by loading the Epic Games Store and clicking a button. The current freebie on there is Polytron's excellent, world bending puzzle-platformer, Fez. It's definitely worth the zero doubloons they’re asking for it. In fact, it’s worth at least 100,000,000 times that. Fez is great.

Epic Games Store exclusive Hades will hop on the Steam train this December

Supergiant Games launched Hades exclusively on the Epic Games Store at the end of 2018, becoming one of the OG combatants in the Great Store War that followed in 2019. Though we’ll never truly know why they set-up in a store that's paying games to be there, they’ve decided that a year is enough time to be away from Steam. Hades is coming to Early…

Mutant Year Zero and Hyper Light Drifter free on Epic Games Store

Another week, another free game on the Epic Games Store - two, even. Until next Thursday you can grab the tip-top tactical action of Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden and the top-down zip-zoom explore-o-action of Hyper Light Drifter for free. MYZ is a wild freebie, both because it came out less than one year ago and because it's chuffing lovely. Our former Alec (RPS…

Melon-twisting puzzler Gnog is free on the Epic Games Store

"Gnog is absolutely spellbinding and charming in its daft, joyful silliness," our former John (RPS in peace) said in his Gnog review when it finally came out last year. A big fan of twiddling and twisting and tugging heads to see the secrets they hold, that one. And in the game. Gnog hands us playful puzzleheads to open up, look inside, fiddle with, and eventually…

Epic’s CEO shouldn’t be riling the mob going after Ooblets over its Epic exclusivity

As many good-lookin' small-budget games are wont to, Ooblets has signed a timed exclusivity deal with the Epic Games Store in exchange for extra funding. That's common enough that we didn't even post about it. Also disappointingly common is the harrassment which follows, here directed at Glumberland, the tiny two-person development team behind the 'kinda Pokémon with cute dance-offs' game. The studio misjudged the tone…

MechWarrior 5 delayed to December, confined to Epic Store

After a decade of waiting, a delay of another three months for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is but a blink of the eye. Wait! Don't blink just ye- aw for. Now you've done it. You've blinked a fly into your eye and now its six legs are tickling your sclera and its wings buzzing against your eyelid. You'll be fine once it's out, I'm sure, but…

This War Of Mine and Moonlighter are both free on Epic this week

Epic Games started out giving away one free game per fortnight to lure people into their new Store. Then they moved to weekly giveaways. Now, this week, they have two games free for keepsies. I don't know where this acceleration of freebies ends, but I can tell you that you have seven days to grab This War Of Mine and Moonlighter.

Beyond: Two Souls continues David Cage’s reign of terror on PC today

Quantic Dream's line of PlayStation-exclusive story 'em ups continue to trickle onto PC, with 2013's Beyond: Two Souls arriving today. This is the one where Ellen Page is pals with a spooky ghost and Willem Dafoe plays his usual creepo weirdman. This is a rare game where Quantic Dream realise that the 'muffed this one right up' outcomes of their quick-time events are far more…

Limbo is free for keepsies on the Epic Games Store right now

Spooky-ooky puzzle-platformer Limbo, the game our former Kieron (RPS in pieces) dismissed as "Rick Dangerous for Goths", is the latest giveaway on the Epic Games Store. Playdead's tale of an oft-eviscerated kid searching for his sister was very much part of the early-tensies contemporary canon. It's a game one could hardly help but own through some bundle or freebie, though now I imagine a fair…

Overcooked is free to keep on Epic Games Store this week

The Epic Game Store's giveaway du jour is the brillo Overcooked. A co-op cooking game for up to four (local only) about wobbly little chefs running around top-down diorama kitchens, preparing ingredients and serving dishes. Simple, except sometimes you're trying to serve food during an earthquake, or across a kitchen built into multiple moving trucks. Good fun, and while its sequel improved on the recipe,…

Epic covering refund costs for crowdfunded games going exclusive to their store

Epic Games are continuing to slap on a thick coat of cash to smooth over problems with their substandard store, now announcing money is their solution to discontent over crowdfunded games such as Shenmue III becoming Epic exclusives. For games whose crowdfunding campaigns offered keys for the game on a specific store before the game became a timed Epic exclusive, Epic now say, they'll either…

If you like spaceships, western music, and combinations thereof, hie thee to the Epic Games Store to grab Rebel Galaxy for free. The 2015 debut from Double Damage Games is the latest giveaway Epic are funding to lure you into the cyberwoods. History has taught me that people on the Internet respond favourably to spaceships with a western twang.

Enter The Gungeon is this week’s Epic Games Store freebie

The silly, maddeningly tough and compelling Enter The Gungeon by Dodge Roll Games is the new giveaway on the Epic Games Store, and an easy pick for fans of terrible puns. Take the Binding Of Isaac (or any roguelike-like action dungeon crawler), clean up the blood, and stuff it with bullets to dodge and videogame firearm goofs. Descend into the six chambers of the Gungeon…
