Fortnite’s newest dance is no stranger to love

Did... did Fortnite run out of pop culture to nick? Have we really exhausted every last dance move, team? Was there nothing the kids find more romantic than a 1987 pop jam turned early web prank? This Valentine's Day, Epic Games introduced a whole new generation of kids to rick-rolling, announcing an Astley-tastic "Never Gonna" emote to the game using the oldest trick in the…

Fortnite’s new event mode is basically Counter-Strike

It's time for another one of those limited time Fortnite events and (if you hadn't heard) it's currently February so Epic have gone with a Valentine's sort of theme with the title Love And War. As it do with Fortnite events, there's a new game mode to try out and new themed costumes to buy as well. The new game mode is a decidedly Counter-Strike…

Fortnite’s long-overdue Chapter 2: Season 2 arrives with a new physics engine next month

You could've just called it Season 12. Instead, I have to report that - after being pushed back another two weeks - Fortnite Battle Royale: Chapter 2: Season 2 will finally launch on February 20th. As they say, though, good things come to those who wait. Those extra two weeks of Season 1 will come with new Overtime Challenges, an unannounced two-week long limited event,…

Fortnite is giving every player a fortnight of free gifts for Winterfest

On the heels of the Rise of Skywalker trailer reveal inside Fortnite is yet another injection of cosmetic content. The yearly Winterfest has arrived to the island with lots of frosty outfits, emotes, and glider skins. Although you'll inevitably be encouraged to buy and spend V-Bucks on some of them, Epic are giving away a fortnight's worth of free presents to every player.

You can grab a lightsaber in Fortnite this week for a proper showdown

It's that time of year again. A new Star Wars movie is coming, which means that Disney have partnered with countless other brands to make sure there are stormtroopers and lightsabers and blasters in your face every day. One of their latest partnerships is with Fortnite, where Geoff Keighley, director J.J. Abrams, and Ben Schwartz (as a stormtrooper) got together in-game on Saturday to show…

Fortnite trades rifles for rods in this weekend’s Fishing Frenzy

Now here's an esport I can get behind. Fortnite Chapter 2 brought a pretty decent fishing mini-game to Epic's battle royale, and now it's time to prove who's the best at sitting patiently next to a puddle. Pack your sandwiches and put on those waders. Fishing Frenzy is kicking off a high-stakes weekend of baiting and waiting, with some real-life loot up for grabs if…

Fortnite gets technical, adding DirectX 12 support in this week’s update

This week's Fortnite update is much like any other. A few bug fixes here, some rebalances there, clean the blood off the grass for another night's mass-murder. But one of patch 11.20's least noticeable updates may, in fact, be its most important. Epic Games have added DirectX 12 support to their massive battle royale, laying the groundwork for future graphical and technical flourishes while providing…

Fortnite summons the Storm King for a spooky PvE boss battle event

Halloween has arrived in Fortnite Battle Royale with a honking great cooperative boss battle in an event mode like something out of an MMORPG. The Storm King LTM sees the big boy and his undead armies rise again and sends a few dozen players out to stop him. I've had a few cracks myself and been surprised by quite how tough the fight is.

Epic Games sue tester for “spoiling” Fortnite: Chapter 2

Epic Games, developers of that little game that you might have heard of called Fortnite, are suing a UX tester for leaking details about their big shift into Chapter 2. They say that Ronald Sykes caused them harm by Tweeting things he shouldn’t have about season 11, which eventually arrived after their big black hole event a couple of weeks ago.

Loot boxes should be regulated under gambling laws, Children’s Commissioner recommends

The Children's Commissioner for England, an official but independent role advocating for children's rights and interests, has recommended that the government control loot boxes under gambling laws. This week the Commissioner's office published a report into the experiences of kiddywinkles who play games online, with a few action points. After talking with kids, it recognises a lot of good they get from games but is…

Fortnite Chapter 2 is live, exploring a whole new world

After being swallowed by a black hole, Fortnite has now returned as Fortnite Chapter 2. Month. That's a month, Epic. Month takes the battle royale action to a whole new island, one which (so far) doesn't bear the scars of two years of mystical and cataclysmic events. Month even adds fishing, which now makes Fortnite officially an RPG (sorry, I don't make the rules).

Fortnite: Battle Royale has been replaced by a black hole [Updated]

Update: The black hole has secrets. More below. Fortnite: Battle Royale's ominous countdown has ended, and a rocket barrage fractured its (extremely pretty) skydome. Then all the players, the entire map, and even the long-suffering battle bus were hoovered up into oblivion. Now the entire game's been replaced by a mysterious (and occasionally horrifically flickering) black hole. A normal Sunday night.

Fortnite teases a clean slate with leaks for Fortnite: Chapter 2

Fortnite's had a good run. Since an admittedly awkward 2017 launch, it's become this cultural behemoth, completely unparseable yet unstoppably popular. But it's acquired some bloat over those two years - Map locations have vanished, reappeared and warped in and out. Weapons and gimmicks have floated in and out of an interdimensional vault, a vault intimately tied to the battle royale's ongoing plot. That's plenty…

Clocks across Fortnite are counting down to the end of the world this Sunday

In our fleshy real world, the doomsday clock is a nifty little system for working out how close the human race is to oblivion. As of this January, it sits at two minutes to midnight, thanks to the "simultaneous existential threats" of climate change and war. Never one to reject a good idea, Fortnite: Battle Royale has implemented its own countdown to the end of…

Fortnite is too “addictive”, lawsuit claims

*Pop*. That's the sound of a can of worms springing open, the contents of which are now swarming across my face as I grapple with this story. A Montreal law firm has requested authorisation to launch a class-action lawsuit against Fortnite for being too addictive. They're doing this on behalf of the parents of two children, aged ten and fifteen. Core to Calex Legal's suit…

Epic defend Fortnite’s new cross-platform matchmaking

Throwing Fortnite players from all platforms into the same matches was a bold move risking horrible imbalance, yet Epic are still confident their matchmaking will work it out. The idea that someone on PC with keyboard and mouse playing against a person tapping on a pocket telephone or twiddling a diddy Switch is a weird one to me. Epic trust that their matchmaking system will…

Fortnite’s apocalypse enters overtime as Season 10 steals one more week

Fortnite's latest patch delays the inevitable. Oh, the end is still very much nigh for Battle Royale Season 10 - the apocalypse has just been pushed back a week, is all. Rather than ending this Sunday, October 6th, Fortnite's tenth season will now come to a close one week later on October 13th. Epic Games haven't quite revealed why Season 11 has been pushed back.…

Batman grapples into Fortnite Battle Royale

Battle-royale-slash-ginormous-advertising-platform Fortnite has confirmed its Batman partnership in a blink and you’ll miss it livestream. Luckily, as is the power of online video, you can watch it again at your leisure, including right below. Or you can hop right into the game, where there are doubtless many bats competing to be the last one standing.

Fortnite plays Prop Hunt and scoffs tacos in new zones

A murderer could be hiding inside a toilet, lamp, lounger, car, barbecue, bin, or even fluffy plant in Fortnite Battle Royale, thanks to the weird new zone added in today's update. Whilst in Moisty Palms you have the magical ability to transform into a random prop by crouching. You cannot shoot while transformed but you can run, and surely no one will notice anything suspicious…
